Hi all,

I'm thinking about buying my first Porsche! I'm very close, I just wanted to use the collective knowledge of the forum to check if there is anything obvious I should be aware of or have missed:

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2017...

It's this one, the dealer let me drive a Gen 1 2.7 with 68k miles on it first, and then this one, everything felt slightly nicer, cleaner, newer, 1 extra gearer. The previous owner even put in a new DAB radio which was one of the things I wanted (I'll be commuting in the car so won't be on it every second of the day).

It's just been porsche serviced, MOT'd. It doesn't have PASM but it does have full-cow. I wasn't sure about the 'R' styling at first but actually it looks pretty good in person.

Should I have any reservations or should I deposit immediately?

Looks very nice...I'am not sure its got full leather though no stitching visible on the dash.

I think Klippie may be right about it not being full leather.

It also seems to be missing the Sport mode button and Cruise control. Does it have heated seats and Bose sound? My car has these options and I'd particularly miss the Sport mode and Cruise is they weren't there.

Looks nice though and a good colour.

It depends what you've come from and what you'll use the car for. I came from a mk7 Golf GTi that I used daily, so wanted a certain specification. Things I wanted as must haves were PASM, cruise, xenon, parking sensors, sport chrono and heated seats. I found a car with that spec bar heated seats, so I had them retrofitted. They aren't the quietest things on a cruise either, lots of tyre noise, I actually had mine professionally sound proofed to take the edge off. If it was a weekend toy I'd be more than happy with a zero option Cayman though smile

You can retrofit cruise easily enough by the way if that is a requirement. It depends what you're happy with at the end of the day. The car you've linked to doesn't have many options, but it does seem very fairly priced.

Good luck with the search.

James.

Edit, just seen it's a 2.9. There are 3.4 versions around with better spec, albeit with more miles. One example here: I just found a great car on Auto Trader:

Personally as long as there are stacks of invoices and service records mileage doesn't put me off in the slightest. Just another thought for you anyway smile

Looks like a nice tidy example with low miles.

PASM is a good option with larger wheels, I wouldn't have 19"s without it, but think the wheels on that car are 17 or 18"?

For comparison I paid £14500 for a 2007 Cayman 2.7 with 55,000 miles on recently from a dealer.

Go for it - you won't regret it wink

I have a Gen1 2.7 with the same colour/wheel combo.
It was also my first Porsche and I've had it almost 2 years now, love it and if I were to try and step higher up the Porsche ladder it would be for a Gen 2.
Have you thought about buying a shed for your daily commute? how long is your commute?
I have a cheap old Freelander for commuting, tip runs, dogs etc and the Cayman comes out at the weekends or Summer evenings. It works really well, keeps the miles down on the Cayman (they are really holding their price at the moment) and keeps the Cayman 'special'. Only extra tangible costs are insurance and tax but well worth it I think with regards keeping the Cayman from depreciating.

Nah... drive it every day, like I do, and then every day feels special!

Plus, saving on "shed" servicing, insurance, tax, etc may well be more than the depreciation of both cars?

The 2.9 should be the gen2 engine....... Well it is in my book.
Great engine, have that any day over a gen1 S............cos it will not blow up.
This means your life will not be on the edge thinking about it......
And the car will retain its value much better than a gen1 anything!!!

It looks great, should be no trouble with that mileage, and a warrenty as well....

Go get it quick, before you loose a beautiful car....... Then in a few years upgrade to a nice 981.....

Good luck.

Well, I just can't believe you two have agreed on something???

Hopefully you will now be friends for life....

Just goes to show how Porsche ownership can bring people together, for now anyway.

Sorry to hijack, I'm wanting to save for a Cayman next year, how do people rate the 2.9 Vs 3.4 re the 987. I'll be looking for a 2010 onwards.

This.

I have a 2.9. I would have bought a 3.4 if I had £30k, but I only had £20k. So I bought a 2.9.
