I started thinking about changing my car towards the end of last year. Initially had no real idea of what I wanted, and I can't remember where the idea of maybe looking at a Porsche came from, but at some point I convinced myself that I would really like a Cayman.

Some research, reading of reviews, and talking to a friend who, it turns out, has owned one for a couple of years (I never knew, but I haven't seen him for a while) ended up pointing me towards a Gen II 987. My budget dictated I would be looking at a car from 2010 to 2012, in the knowledge that if a 2012 car fell inside my price range it would probably be a much higher mileage vehicle.

Fast forward several months of occasionally looking at the classifieds to see what was out there, and finally getting the go ahead from Mrs DIW35, I have now physically been to view a couple of examples, and today found one that I like, is within budget, has an acceptable mileage, ticks any relevant boxes, and it should be ready for me to pick up at the beginning of next week.

It's not over specced but nor is it absolutely stock. Not having had a Porsche before I'm not familiar with any options that are considered a 'must have' on the Cayman, but I'm an easily pleased old soul and I think the car will suit me just fine.

Needless to say I can't wait.

Really looking forward to it. Only went for a fairly short test drive, but felt right at home with it.

If you feel that posting pictures is not your thing and rather silly (on the grounds that we have a good idea what it looks like) - some of us will quite understand.... On the other hand if you want to give us some insight into your views on the car's dynamics - how it handles and the engine behaves, some of us will be very interested.

One thing I will find interesting will be the PDK gearbox. Up until now I have always thought of myself as a manual driver, relishing the extra input and involvement.

During the test drive the car was left in auto, though we did try swapping between the different sport modes. I didn't try the semi-auto so that will be something to experience next time I drive it.

When I asked on here if there was a preference for manual or PDK, both versions got the thumbs up and the advice was to go for personal choice. I have driven semi-auto cars before, so whether the Cayman was PDK or manual wasn't going to figure too highly as long as the rest of the car was right.

Congrats, OP.

Ironic as I feel I'm a year behind in your shoes - convincing myself I'll be selling my current toy and joining the Porsche club next year. I've got my heart set on a 981S and I haven't even driven one yet!

Enjoy and let us know your thoughts :-)
