Good morning all,

I'm looking to buy a 981 Boxster S and have a budget of up to £48,000. I particularly want a good spec, so I'm looking for PDK, Sport Chrono, PASM, PSE and heated seats. But I'm struggling to find much with all the options I want, so I'd probably be better off looking at a Boxster GTS.

But the values of the GTS seem to be all over the place. For example:

This 2014 GTS with 8,000 miles is £51,995. It's at a Porsche dealer, comes serviced and with two years warranty.

https://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/...

So by rights, a private seller, warranty about to expire should be sub £50,000? Just creeping into budget!

But they're not! Check out this 2014 GTS. Private seller, 10,000 miles, not much warranty left, £57,500.

https://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/...

So, what's going on with prices? Has anyone been keeping an eye on the prices lately? I've only just started to look, so I don't know if they're just starting to fall, or if they've been at this level for a while.

What's the chances of getting one for £48,000 in the near future? I'm in no rush to buy, I could wait until winter.

Thanks,

Dan

£48k seems low to me for a GTS, but worth bearing in mind that chrono and PSE can be retrofitted if you find a car with all the other bits you want.

Thanks for your reply. My thoughts are that if OPC are selling low mileage cars for £52k, then surely some higher mileage cars as private sales should be at £47-48k, no? Current prices don’t seem to make sense!

That’s interesting about the Chrono and PSE. Do you know the rough cost to fit the PSE?

One other option is to buy a much cheaper Boxster S with Chrono and PASM, and fit the Fabspeed Performance Pack

http://www.fabspeed.com/porsche-981-boxster-cayman...

This would then come with the switchable exhaust and other go faster bits!

Could possibly haggle PSE for £2k.

The silver GTS at Tonbridge OPC is fairly basic spec (from memory no navigation etc) and they've had it for ages.... I'd be tempted to say at least 3-6 months.

Private sellers are asking a lot as there are not that many about and because most of them are still under Porsche warranty they are pretty safe buys but I'm sure that you will have more negotiation room with a private than a trade seller.
This looks nice and has a big spec with everything that you want

That Silver one has been for sale as mentioned for at least 6 months. They are very sensitive to specification it seems.

I have put mine up for sale but am open to offers, if a dealer had mine I've been told it would be up at 62K.

Ok, that's interesting. I thought they all had sat nav, given that they have the screen! Not sure if I really need sat nav though, I haven't had it in any of my other cars, although it would be nice.

Perhaps they have room to negotiate down to high 40's, if it's been for sale for a long time....

Yes, I've seen this and it's really nice. It's probably the car I will go for. I've got my eye on it.

This is lovely. To be honest, I'm not sure about whether to go manual or PDK.

I had a manual Cayman S (original early 987) and I really didn't like the gearbox. The gear change had loads of play and it was notchy. But I think it was just old. No doubt they're better now too.

In any case, I doubt you have £10k worth of negotiation in that lovely car!

I've had a 987.1 and now a 981.

987 was (and still is - car still in family) a bit notchy/stiff. 981 is a lovely buttery shift.

I would stick (!) with manual as rarer / more fun. PDK still fantastic, and great for city driving but it wears off for me.

I bought a high spec OPC car back in feb. Bottom line is I paid £55k for it, cash no trade in. I could have got it cheaper off them with warranty until Nov 17 but extended it to Nov 19 as part of the price.

At the time it was the cheapest in the country but one of the highest specs. Mileage was 10k which was on the high side compared to the market. I had been looking for a similar spec S as you and to be honest gave up / was not prepared to compromise.

I was more than happy with the deal and 3k miles in (its a 4th car) I can't stop driving it relatively to other cars I've had as toys. Am I pleased I stumped up the extra for the GTS, yep, more and more so the more I drive it.

It was also my first PDK porsche. At first I was unsure if I should have got a manual (much rarer) but I now drive it 90% in manual mode and 10% in sport auto mode. It is like learning to drive again but with some practice / use (more than just a test drive) it is sooooo much fun, just as much fun as a manual but with both hands always on the wheel when pressing on. Would I get it in PDK again, yes without that shadow of a doubt I did have at first.

A boxster S with PASM, Sports Chrono, PSE would be a great find but to me the GTS is more than the sum of its parts. The overall package / styling is jsut better. Is that worth the premium only you can decide. In terms of values I'm pretty confident the gap between GTS / good spec S will only widen over time. But being behind the wheel of a high spec 718 loaner at the moment, you can't lose out with either 981 in terms of enjoyment ;-)

ps if your going for a GTS really try to get:

- GTS interior pack
- GTS exterior pack (depends on exterior colour but gloss back v matt black trim can make a massive difference)
- Climate (dual air, so many don't have this and none climate sucks)
- heated seats
- BOSE
- full telephone prep (not just bluetooth)
- auto mirrors / wipers
- cruise (I hardly use so depends on use/resale potential)
- folding mirrors
- rear parking sensors
- alcantara ie not fitted with the FOC full leather option. Unless you hate alcantara its what a GTS is about.

The GTS packs especially where a high cost option but don't seem to make much difference with second hand values so if you have a choice of one with or without definately go for one with. Some of the others are just nice to haves but worth getting familiar with what the nice to have are.

Thanks! I'm so amazed by this car. It's perfect for UK roads. I can't see you would ever need any more car than this!

You don't need any more car than these!! They are perfect, and I can't fault mine in any way! Fuel consumption is brilliant, handling is fabulous, .....everything is perfect! I have had mine since the end of November last year, and bought it specifically for European road trips! After our 5000 mile trip in May, I can't wait for the next one!! I am involved in "Performance Cars" in various ways, and cannot think of a better all round car to have used as we did! The attention it created in every country we visited was incredible, with people taking photos, people asking me to rev it up so they could hear the music, people wanting to sit in it, .... amazing!! I really thought when we arrived in Monaco, and the South of France around St Tropez, it would be quite insignificant, but no, it created just as much attention, it was unbelievable!! Mine is Racing Yellow, and I think that is why it is so interesting, similarly yours being red will be the same! They need to be bright colours!!
