OK I have had a chapter of woe with my recently acquired 2002 3.2 S Boxster

I am now thinking the best route to sort the disaster would be to acquire a decent s/h engine from a reputable source/breaker but where to start?

Anyone out there know of something?

Are these still in operation?

http://www.porsch-apart.co.uk/ in the UK
www.douglasvalley.co.uk in the UK

What is wrong with yours and how are you going to tell that the engine you buy is better than the one you have?

Fair question
The death rattle at t start up was the warning
The plastic debris in the sump the clue???
Basically trust a seller that a second hand engine is a more viable solution than a totally rebuild???
Your call on the logic guys
I’m just the confused punter

Worth getting a reliable indie to check the engine, may just need new cam chain tensioners.

I would visit Harlech and get their opinion.

An engine rebuild could add value to your car. A replacement from a scrapped car could be buying more trouble. The cost of the engine swap is the same for both solutions, but you will get a worthy guarantee on the rebuild and have a known quantity.

Unfortunately on a cheap ish 986 an engine rebuild has negligible value. Any extra value of itself is more than lost in the cost of doing the rebuild. It becomes a head vs heart issue.
