Bought a set of the standard Porsche fitment of 18" Boxster wheels with winter tyres, and fitted them this weekend. For some reason I was expecting them to come with Michelins, but it was PIrelli Sottozero S2.

Just above zero, damp and salty roads round here just now, and an absolute revelation after struggling with P Zeroes in winter. The wheels actually look great on the car too, which is a relief, as new replacement set of 718 Cayman 18" with TPS is almost twice the price of the winter set of tyres fitted on Boxster rims.

I'm a lot more cheerful about using the 718 through the winter now. P Zero performance in cold weather does not inspire confidence, but I only realised the extent after fitting something a bit more suitable.

What sort of money did they cost you?

I am interested in doing the same so your views are appreciated,

The official Porsche accessories site lists the 718 Boxster/Cayman 18" winter wheels at £2,176, as under...

The 981 Boxster/Cayman 18" winter wheels are £1,971, as under...

All details from: http://content2.eu.porsche.com/prod/pag/tequipment...

I'm not sure what wheels the OP has fitted as "the standard Porsche fitment" for half the 718 wheel price? Perhaps he could expand on this?

NOTE: The 981/718 rear wheels are a different width and offset. Rear tyres are the same size, but still contact your insurers as the 981 rims themselves do not meet the manufacturers spec for a 718 and may give wriggle room in the event of a claim.

Ebay, forums are you friend if you want to avoid paying full whack. I sourced an original mint/un-repaired set of 18" wheels for my 997 with newish tyres for £800. I've had them fitted for the last couple of weeks and they are a revelation.

There are plenty of sets of 18" wheels on ebay for not a lot of money - no point in paying silly prices.. I paid around £500 for a set of wheels with new (summer) tyres. Prices may be higher at this time of year for obvious reasons.

Has anyone fitted winter tyres to 20" wheels? Is this even possible?

They were £2221 inc vat and centre caps. The centre caps are different to the standard 18" Cayman. A new set of standard 18" Cayman wheels with TPS, but without tyres, was quoted to me as around £3950. The best price I could find on new Michelin winter tyres was something like £960.

I did have a look into used 981 wheels and winter tyres. For the cost saving I decided that in 2 or 3 winters' time I'd probably still be worrying about the spec, thinking that the offset looked wrong. I doubt I'll be worrying too much about having spent a few hundred quid more than I could have got away with, but time will tell.

Very possible. The same tyres I have on my 18" wheels are available in a 20" size suitable for the 718. Have never done it - most prefer the extra compliance of a taller sidewall for winter - TBH if I could have easily sorted out 17" wheels for winter I would have done it.

So why does the Porsche site quote £2,176 for 718 Cayman 18" wheels AND tyres (as in my post above)? Surely that IS the price?

What did you buy for £2221? For what model? Still none the wiser.

Because they are not 718 Cayman alloys, they are 718 Boxster, but fit the Cayman. I bought Boxster alloys with coloured centre caps for £2221. The £2176 deal evidently does not include centre caps. I have fitted them to my 2017 718 Cayman. 18" Cayman alloys with fitted winter tyres are not listed as an accessory by Porsche to my knowledge.

If you have a look on the configurator you can see the difference between 18" Boxster wheels and 18" Cayman wheels. Don't know why the Cayman wheels and fitted winter tyres are not available , but I was told they are not.

If you get winter wheels and tyres via the Fleabay route, what about TPM? Does one need to get TPM valves to stop the software complaining? And if TPM valves are needed do they need to be coded to the car?

Cheers. I’ll have a look into those.

If the car has TPMS as standard, not having the sensors fitted is an MOT fail, but I'm not sure the software would get terribly uptight about it. Might invalidate insurance and warranty though. For the the 718 the genuine sensors appear not to be coded to the car. I just fitted the wheels, set the tyre pressures, changed to the new tyre type in the setup menu, and the sensors got detected correctly on the next drive.
