I know there is a concurrent PCM / Connect thread going, but it has turned into a bit of a debate and I am hoping for a simple confirmation:

When I had an Audi, I had to buy and pay for a separate SIM, because Apple had prevented their iPhones being used to hotspot from (so that your car's connect features use your handset's monthly data allowance) - there was no such restriction for Android devices.

Can anyone confirm whether it is possible to use your iPhone as a source of data for a Porsche, and in particular the latest 718s (on which all the Connect and Connect Plus things are standard)? I know it's still VAG, but wondered whether Apple had lifted this restriction and/or if it doesn't apply to Porsche.

Maybe it doesn't matter if I use the Apple Car Play the whole time, but it'd be good if it does work.

Thanks!

Thanks - my question isn't whether Connect works (it's likely given your model that you are still within the 12/24 month period within which Porsche provides data).

My question is, once the initial period of free data is up, is it possible to use an Apple iPhone (i.e. not any other type of phone) as a source of data, via a hotspot?

Another 991.2 GTS driver here and my iPhone is used as a hotspot for the car.
TBH I don't think the sharing of data is limited to the handset, more the mobile network provider and if they permit your handset to act as a hotspot.

From my experience with PCM 3.x on a 2017 car the options are not very obvious - USB, CarPlay, Bluetooth with all seeming to do slightly different things. From memory the Porsche Connect app is required + handset hotspot on for the car to use your handset data.

Thanks - yes the handset is capable of blocking - Apple specifically prevented it on Audi models.

Sounds like it should work with Porsche now, though - even though of course USB, Carplay etc. are different.
