981 & 718 Steering Wheels
Discussion
Hi everyone
I have a PDK 981 GTS with a multi-function steering wheel. And i have to say that the push/pull PDK buttons are simply f
king dreadful!!!
I would like the proper left/right paddles but it seems the only option is the Sport Design wheel, which looks great but loses all the multi-function buttons - and i'd kinda like to keep them given how overly clustered PCM is and difficult to navigate whilst driving!
Are there any other options? I've read on other forums that it might be possible to fit the new 718 MFSW but with special coding - and frankly i'm dubious. Anybody know?
Cheers

Someone “optioned” the multi function wheel on your GTS as the sport wheel is standard with flappy paddles on a PDK car.
IMHO you don;t need the multi function buttons on a sports car, I have the opposite view to you, if your pootling about there is no problem with the normal controls, if your “on it” the sports wheel is on the right side of being perfect ie I much prefer it to the 718 equivalent wheel.

No need to be dubious - I retrofitted the 718/982 MF wheel to my 981 with great results. 'Plug & play' with the correct CANBUS adapter unit fitted to the wheel.spooooook said:

Am I right in saying you can only fit the 718 MFSW to a 981 if the 981 originally had a MFSW?In other words, you can't fit a 718 MFSW to a 981 with SportDesign or (plain) Sports steering wheel?

Thanks guys, not sure what a CANBUS adaptor, is this something any decent garage should be able to do?
This is what you would need: https://gpsadapter.us/products/stmv1spooooook said:
No, it is possible to fit a MFSW where one was not previously fitted, but this would require coding by the dealer using PIWIS and subsequent removal of the relevant control stalk from the steering column.
What about the wiring for the MFSW's volume control, and any other function Sports or SD wheels don't have? The lower right stalk on my Sports Design PDK doesn't adjust volume.
I don't see how coding alone can add wiring, unless you're saying the wiring is there but simply unused for non-MFSW wheels?
OPC Sheffield explained to me in 2015, when I was looking at a non-MFSW to MFSW swap, that it was not possible due to missing wiring in the loom.
But then what do OPCs know! At my recent 40k service my dash cam caught the technician explaining to another member of staff that the rear boot has to be popped to read the oil level properly in the dash!

I remember you bringing this up at the time, and it still makes be subconsciously cynical/dubious EVERY time I now speak to an OPC Technician.....!! Thanks...!!
It’s almost the sort of thing that just “couldn’t” be false, as it’s just so ridiculous....!!

At my recent MOT (different OPC) I asked about the boot popping for oil check. The service receptionist went off to ask. She came back and said "no, not on your model, but on some other models this is the case."It’s almost the sort of thing that just “couldn’t” be false, as it’s just so ridiculous....!!
I've no idea which, but I can see how those with an old fashioned dipstick would need the boot to be popped... and indeed opened!

I’ve got this wheel, I asked Porsche Reading to order a Sport Design as part of the deal when I collected the car a few weeks ago but was told they’re on 6 month back order.
I presume as mine isn’t the multifunction it should be a straight forward swap for the 718 wheel with paddles?
