Hi, just wondering if anyone could comment on the reliability (or otherwise!) of the Gen11 cars DFI engines. I understand that the IMS has been designed out so that's one thing less to worry about. Anything else though? Thanks, Dave

Potential issues with the 3.4 DFI I have come across in my 1 year of ownership include:

Fuel pump failed (poor starting leading to no starting)
Exhaust gaskets blowing, bolts can sieze too.

Thats it though

Issues so far with my 3.4 DFI in 6 years of ownership are,

  • Zero
  • Nil
  • Zip
  • Nada
  • Nothing at all
I think that just about covers things.

For what it's worth, the same list applies for the rest of the car as well. It's been 100% rock solid.

Zero issue engine wise for me and I’ve racked up close to 100k over over different vehicles.

I guess Porsche have managed to turn some previous and much talked about engine failures into a "profit opportunity". Thousands of customers terrified of leaving the dealer network or departing from the official service schedule while at the same time handing over £500 a year for extended warranty. Easy money.

So far I've stayed with OPC for services although I don't follow the official schedule (due to lower mileage). Whenever I've checked out good independents in my area they seem to offer very little cost advantage. Haven't bothered with extended warranty. To date I'm "cash in" by more than £2,000 on my 981. That cash sits in a notional jar on the mantelpiece for any serious problems.

Happily I've owned sports cars of various makes for most of my adult life, studiously avoided the temptation of "modifications" and haven't yet encountered any serious failures. My jar on the mantelpiece remains in very good shape!
