potential 986 purchase
Discussion
So, I've been looking for a cheapish roadster to enjoy for a year or 2 and I've been looking at the bmw Z4 or nissan 350z, but, I've recently seen a nice Boxster 2.7.
The main reason I ovelooked the boxster is for the same price as the Z4's I'd be looking at an older car with more miles.
Now, I've seen a nice 2000 model 2.7 with only 70k. It is around 4 years older than the Bmw's.
Would I be mad buying an older boxster?
Anyone owned both and able to give me a comparison on what they are like to live with?
Thanks, Johnny.

nice friendly bunch too and a huge wealth of info.
986 is a fairly well understood proposition at the age it is, but it is important to check what mechanically has and hasn't been done and therefore would need to factor into the price. They are pretty bulletproof when used regularly and well maintained.
The going rate for a 2.7 with 70k miles £4-5k, higher or lower depending on what has been done to it.

I had a 2.7 2000 (W Plate) for about 6 years, as a weekend toy. Got it 60k, and sold it when it was nearly 70k. It is probably the most fun and special car you could have got in that price range but definitely more expensive to maintain and be ready for some expensive big bills that might come in a suprise! If you are lucky, you would get away with it, if not, might ruin your ownership. Z4 or Z3 definitely cheaper to run.
I looked at a car today. It's seems an honest car needing a little tlc. Its only covered about 400 miles in the last year.
I asked if the ims had been done and he told me the car has the stronger ims from factory and not the lesser item. I think he meant 2row bearing compared to single row.
It's a 2000 model 2.7 with 70k on it. Fsh.
I think that's wrong. Am I right?
Thanks, John.

Probably better off asking over here. Some clever knowledgable types frequent this thread.
