From the limited videos I’ve seen it looks like the 981 overrun bangs have gone ?

Yep, they've gone and exhaust volume is massively decreased. The tone is also much more bassy due to the separated exits.

100% a good thing.
One of my biggest hates on modern performance cars is all that engineered in popping and farting crap. It sounds awful.
If a car pops and bangs its because its a performance related reason such as ign cut on a sequential or ALS etc.

Modern DCT equipped cars are the biggest offenders of this, makes you look a massive nob imo

Like looks, seats, external colour and stitching, it's all just personal preference. I'm a big fan of the 981 GTS/Spyder warbles - they're just just good fun and they make me laugh and smile when I'm driving

One of the reasons I bought a late 981 over a 718 was the noise, including the pops and crackles.
Six months in and it's wearing a bit thin now...

A good point, now that the Spyder is a GT car smile

I own a GT3 Touring and a GT3 RS and have a Spyder on the way. Neither of the GT3s have the artificial overrun crackles and pops which is a really good thing in my opinion. Sports exhaust makes the exhaust tone deeper without any sounds that could become tiresome. I like it this way and it’s really positive in my opinion that the Spyder follows suit.

Seems the F6 noise has gone altogether, even with PSE: https://www.pistonheads.com/news/ph-driven/2019-po...

I’m sure a tuner could dial out the over-fueling if needed. With the exhaust in quiet mode on the 981 most of the pops are dialed out too. I think the car works will and is enjoyable in both modes, but I do find myself turning it off through villages on the continent out of respect. There’s a time and a place...

Come to think of it, if someone didn’t like the pops and bangs, couldn’t they somehow put the GT4 map on the ECU then?

Absolutely agree and as you have to engage it i suspect most of the time it will be dialled out as you said unless everyone is jumping in and hitting the button at startup?

Sadly not. Mine has PSE so not 'standard' exhaust, but if you accelerate moderately hard it still pops and crackles every change. I'm not talking full beans, just slightly more than 'gentle'.

When I first got the car I turned it on straight away. Now it’s just not so cool in a city as it attracts the wrong sort of attention and a bit of respect for your fellow countrymen goes a long way!

In 2019 any perceptibly “polluting” vehicle is becoming less acceptable I suppose. It doesn’t actually pop and bang when cold much anyway....

I only get full on November 5th with the exhaust button on (esp. with sport plus which is definitely more poppy), but I suppose if you accelerate hard with the exhaust off the valve still opens like F360/430 style mapping under load (where as 987 PSE had less of a on/off feel with the valve than the 981), yes, and you also get some crackling but it’s not really that offensive I would say.

On the motorway I leave it off these days, and I like the dual nature of the car compared to 987.2 PSE where it made very little difference on or off.

Overall I love it personally but it’s actually the crispness/throaty mechanical motorsport raspy sounds I’d miss more than missing the crackling itself on the 718.

You stick a filter in an exhaust, and it’s going to muffle sound just like a catalytic converter already does. There’s no way around that.

I think removing GPF will be highly illegal - that ship has sailed and the main thing is at least Porsche still make an NA6 car that’s at mid engined and still under 1500kg. Makes it more attractive than the bigger offerings from Audi etc for my personal tastes, but not as hardcore as lotus obviously.

The car is in no way at all offensive with the exhaust in quiet mode for normal driving which will get you subtly out of town to then enjoy it properly...

Welcome to the post GPF world.

Everyone was too busy arguing about flat 4 vs flat 6 they missed this coming. Massive reduction in volume all round.
