My Cayman - intermittent starting fault, advice needed
Discussion
Hi all,
New here but after some help if possible...
I have a bizarre intermittent fault with my 2006 Cayman. When I go to start it sometimes it sounds like it struggles to turn over. It turns over once or twice, doesn't start and then an odd whirring noise comes from the engine bay which lasts about 1-2 mins and turns off.
It might do this a couple of times and then finally start. It is not the battery as the last time it happened I was at a garage so they connected a jump start pack and it did the same!
Anyone got any ideas? Thanks in advance.

I would have looked at the battery first, but then I'd be suspecting the starter motor as there isn't much else to whir on turning the engine over. Sounds like it engages for the initial turnover, struggles and then fails in some way. If all the electrical connections to it are good and earthing is OK then I'd suspect the motor itself, but I'm not a mechanic so treat with caution!
