Porsche Boxster S (2001 with 112,000) miles is starting to make a noise - it is loudest coming from the vent on the passenger side of the car. I call it a knock my husband says it isn't smile it reminds me of cars I have heard that had timing issues. I bought the car this spring and when I did I had the dealer put in a new IMS bearing and clutch. Other than this noise the car is an absolute joy! Trying to decide if I should have it towed the 50 miles to dealer or safe to drive. Any advise is welcome!

Hi, We'll need a little more information to try and help.

You call it a knock, but your husband doesn't? What does he call it? Is it a low frequency knock? A high pitched, tap? A tick?, does it speed up with revs? does it go away with more revs?

Did they replace the dual mass flywheel when they did the clutch?

Sorry for all the questions, but it's really difficult to diagnose a sound on a forum. The more detailed description, the more chance you'll have of someone recognising the symptoms.

Also audible from outside the car? if so louder low to the ground, front left right louder with the engine boot/bonnet/cover (whatever it is on a boxster) open etc......all info will help.

working on some of your answers but for now- sound is loudest (honestly not REALLY loud ever) - coming from the vent on the side of the passenger side of the car

I just texted husband on what he calls it will update soon - last night he said it sounded like some old video game he used to play loading - smile

ALso I videoed the car from left trunk around to the passenger vent of the car to track noise but I couldn't post here - new to forum if anyone wants to see it let me know how to get it to you

OK - husband says - it IS closer to a knock than anything else - does not speed up with revs

Detail of work I had done by my request at the dealer back in April when I purchased it - I put on approx 1200 miles since then it has about 112,000 miles now:

  • Inspect car throughly
  • Replace IMS bearing
  • Bearing update kit
  • Crankshaft seal
  • Oil Seperator
  • Oil filter insert
  • Alum Seal Ring
  • OW40 Synthetic
  • Air Filter Cart
  • Cabin-Air Filter
  • Clutch Kit

Doesn't speed up with engine revs? OK, a couple more questions.

Does the sound change or disappear when you press the clutch (I'm assuming it's a manual).

You say it's loudest at the passenger side vent, but you mention the "trunk". Is your car left hand drive?

Will have to check to see if sound changes when I get home but a couple other notes - I found it odd that my battery died at the same time the sound developed - not sure if that is relevant but I heard the sound then a few days later went to start the car to record sound and the battery was so dead it wouldn't turn over just heard starter click - put charger on it and it started - WHEW!

I am USA the driver is on the LEFT of car - Vent I am talking about is on left behind passenger door

Note: I was really upset when I originally posted this - just corrected to say driver is on LEFT - SORRY!
