I have a 2016 981 PDK with sports chrono and PSE.

One of the reasons I bought it over a 718 was the noise. It sounded epic, especially when pressing on; blips on up/downshifts, lots of crackles - you know how they are.

Over time, I just wish it was a little more subtle (quieter) without the buttons pressed. Obviously, with PSE and/or Sport/Sport Plus mode engaged you expect it to be lairy, but in 'nornal' mode it's still rather anti-social/look-at-me.

Is this something which can be programmed out, or am I stuck with sounding like a bell-end every downshift or even mildly accelerating?

Buy a manual 2.0 718 lol :-)

Each to their own, and I respect your concern, however having had both a 981s and 718 GTS, and a GT4 arriving soon, I think you need to drive the car for ‘you’ and for no one else.

I hated the lack of sound in the 718 GTS, and held onto the 981s for that very reason... and I am very excited for my GT4, due to the sound of the NA setup.

I found the 718 GTS really dull and it didn’t thrill me, at all.

I’m sure most people think I’m d*ckhead for driving ‘fancy’ cars (as they call it), especially in Ireland, but I really don’t give a second of thought to such people as I drive these cars for me, and not for other people or to impress anyone else.

If you bought a 981 over a 718 because of the sound... go and enjoy the sound... enjoy your life, as you don’t know when it will end.

One of the great paradoxes of modern sports cars is that the person behind the wheel thinks their farting, popping and banging through town makes them look cool, while everyone else thinks it makes them look silly.

I agree these 981 farts and pops are for 17 year olds ! I don't get the trend at all.
Jags are the worse as they try and get younger people in them !!!

I wish I could turn the farts and pops and fireworks off on my 981 Spyder and just hear the induction roar at high revs. Its ok on rare occasions but even with PSE switched off it comes back by itself above 4500rpm. I wish there was a separate button for farting fireworks and rev matching so they could be turned on / off in any of the modes. Perhaps there is an aftermarket ECU flash available to do this?

a remap would sort it and give you >400bhp

The 718 Spyder sounds awesome and without the cackles etc... much more induction based and therefore not as silly out the car..

Just replace the exhaust with a non - PSE one. The standard exhaust makes less din that PSE does in the off position. The car still makes a lovely cultured noise and suits those of us with a less exhibitionist nature, just fine.

PSE is what it is - if you now don't like it, sell it and buy something else. Remapping a vanilla model will ruin your future resale opportunities.

To keep the car as quiet as possible, keep the exhaust switched off and revs <4000rpm in town/built up areas etc.

I have just bought a Cayman GTS and think it sounds great with pse off. Quite like it on also actually. Nothing wrong with acting like I’m a boy racer again! Who cares if I look a knob.

Does it make pops and crackles driving around in 'standard drive' mode / auto. In regular old drive mode the car just changes gear like a boring old autobox doesn't it? upshifts at 3k revs, no theatre.. At least mine did.. This is what i use going through town.. 0 drama.

I'm not convinced the 981 is a great sounding car, too synthetic and fake for my liking, but I must admit I don't think it crackles and pops when in normal mode? At least I haven't noticed, it does sound awful/ridiculous in sport or sports plus mode though.

The 981 doesn’t crackle or pop when PSE is off.

It also doesn’t crackle or pop when PSE is on in Sports Plus mode. It only crackes when in Sports Mode (not Sports Plus)

It’s doesn’t pop and crackle with PSE off. I tend to drive with mine off, for me it’s just right for cruising around... sport mode when I’m on it on my fun roads.

Correct. You're driving a Porsche so most people will think you're a knob anyway! hehe

At least you haven't got a massive wing stuck on the back to make you look like a proper tool when driving around town...

That's interesting - the 718 is the same. In that case in Sport the anti-lag mechanism is disabled (it wrorks by shutting off the petrol on the overrun and opening the throttle to keep the trubo spinning)

remap alone I would just use a Cobb access point.

for the full 435BHP I would be driving to Germany and seeing Jens not any one here in the UK.

My 2016 CGTS pops and crackles in sport and sport plus but not at all in normal mode no matter the revs, cracking Jekyll & Hyde personality, love it and don’t care if other people don’t like it smile
