Has anyone regretted specing a leather steering wheel on a GT car in place of the standard Alcantara wheel?

I like the Alcantara wheel but on some used cars have seen it resembles an old wooly jumper, so Im thinking of choosing the leather wheel.

It's easily cleaned so it looks like new. Go alcantara on a GTS or GT2/3/4 IMHO smile

Treat it with a bit of respect. Use driving gloves.

it’s the oil on your hands that causes alcantara to look damaged.

Best way to clean it is with warm water diluted with lemon juice and a damp microfibre cloth

Depends on your hands, i love alcantra wheels and they are easy to keep clean. 4 of my cars have them so much nicer in feel.
Some people do have clammy hands and maybe then leather is best.

Can’t stand Alcantara myself, but so many cars come with it, it’s difficult to avoid it.
Wear gloves, simples.
No need to go full on race gloves whilst road driving either, a pair of dark blue or black lightweight thermal items works a treat smile

Leather steering wheel (and interior) is the only downside on my Touring. Much prefer the Alcantara on my other 3s

I had a trimmer PRG use in OEM material to do the steering wheel, gear knob/ gaiter and sun-visors on mine as I prefer the Alcantara too;

I had the Alcantara steering wheel on my former 981 C GTS, as much as do love the look, the feel is something very different; it has a strange artificial feel for me.

My next 718 Gt4 I wil keep the Alcantara steering wheel though, I see it as part of the total package.

The steering wheel is also thin IMHO (coming from multiple ///M BMW, rather thick steering wheels)

So steering-gloves will be the solution for me.

Has anybody here any advice on such steering gloves? Much appreciated.

Gloves and Alcantara steering wheel, I shake my head. Just like the knobs on Tube vids wearing gloves and fooken shorts.

A pair of fine calfskin stringbacks is the answer to everything. If it was good enough for Tim Birkin it’s good enough for us! I use them all the time. Saves your joints in the winter.

And don’t wear shorts either the sweat from your legs will bugger the Alcantara on the seats. Leather is a great material, but we seem to be forgetting that sweaty hands will also make leather shiny and sticky, and rings like some of you wear will scratch and cut it.

What you really need is a wooden wheel with brass studs like what Fangio used, and you can get from Moto Lita, or a Bakelite steering wheel.

You can get good stringbacks online - try the Bentley Drivers Club or RREC shops. But the key is fine calfskin - really sensitive not big heavy things.

I'll have you know, there's f*ck all wrong with my driving gloves young man furious

They're extremely comfortable (and they imbue the wearer with a wonderful sense of smug superiority that's really rather spiffing) :

All in all, they're highly recommended.

I like to think I look a complete tool wearing these (but hey, I drive around in a bright orange Porsche, so most other drivers think I'm a complete knob anyway) biggrin

As you can see, quality like this doesn't come cheap, but my lovely Cup wheel isn't a minging, sweat sodden, crusty, matted POS, so all's well with the world thumbup

It seems to be a very personal thing. Some people love Alcantara and that’s fine.
Others like me can’t stand the stuff, the feel of it makes me cringe and I don’t like the way Alcantara seats stick like Velcro to your trousers.

Get what you like. It’s your car.

Ayup Graham, we discussed this today. Can’t beat the feel of nice shiny leather and it’s great to slide about on in the seat when cornering hard. No probs for you though cos you will drive that immaculate new one like a nun.👍🏻😄
