Both cars can do what you need.
If you're asking the question, it sounds like the GT4 is maybe not for you. Surely you'd know if you want one of them or not?
Both same price though + similar engine? I'd have thought the GT4 would be "better" albeit maybe superseded by 4 years of development vs the newer / new GTS etc etc.If you're asking the question, it sounds like the GT4 is maybe not for you. Surely you'd know if you want one of them or not?
Drive both is probably the standard answer
although I just don't like wasting peoples time, I normally drive whatever car I'm looking at then buy it

By whom? and that obviously blows your warranty out of the window.
To the OP: I have a 981 GT4. I did think about a new GTS 4.0 litre but went for a GT4 as I only use it at weekends.
Most Porsche shops, must be 20 manifold manafactures plus you can choose from now, GT4 is a tuners dream. To the OP: I have a 981 GT4. I did think about a new GTS 4.0 litre but went for a GT4 as I only use it at weekends.
Even a Cobb will get you >400bhp plug and play and no warranty issues.
Good question op, daily GT4, track GT4, GTS if the GT4 didn't have any petrol, but in fairness they both have lots of positives and lots to offer, I think the 4.0L GTS will hold the prices of the 981 GT4 up making deprecation less on both cars, the GTS could be the rarer car due to the current climate
I would go with GTS in your situation - I found the ride in my old 4 pot 718 GTS was brilliantly judged for road use, and it was generally just a lovely car (engine aside). GT4 is slightly more frustrating on the road (unless it's a dry, empty one in Wales), and less comfortable for road use. GT4 is of course twice as good on track, but the GTS won't disappoint on track either.
However, make sure you test both as you may decide the GT4 feels special enough to justify its compromises.

I have a 981 GT4 in “touring” spec but have for now a 4.0 BGTS on order. On track the GT4 is great and incredibly capable, but I’ve been kept honest by the odd 2.5GTS driver. I’m no driving God but had started racing in last year so I wouldn’t say I was letting the car down. My point being both are quite close in terms of performance for 99% of drivers. A 4.0 is going to be a different experience but similar in overall performance.
The GT4 is more mileage sensitive and it is still hard work despite comfort spec. Figured a BGTS will be less mileage sensitive and a be better all rounder and was swung by being able to spec to my tastes.
That said I’d get a GT4 now, like right now while market is on downer, and you could probably still order a GTS or find a used example of that when we see this COVID out and get to experience both!
