Hi having owned a 986 s for a few years I upgraded to a newer 987 at the end of last year. No horror stories with either car and new one has been well maintained and came with Porsche warranty which I have extended. However, I have noticed a loud ticking noise heard best from driver side air intake grill when car is idling. It’s also audible at low speeds. Has anyone else had anything similar?

One possibility could be a stuck hydraulic tappet, this only usually happens if the car has been sitting unused for a decent period of time.
I've had this a few times, it usually clears itself after running a short while in my experience.

I have a 987.1 Cayman which I have owned since new in 2008. It has had this feature since new. It seems to be more obvious when I have started and stopped the car without letting the engine get to operating temperature, and then restart it again.

Indeed, the occasional puff of smoke followed by the 'tap a dee tap' of the injectors is all part of the ownership! Both my 987's did it from brand new. Just why I love the things....they're alive!!!

First month owning mine I thought I was hearing all sorts of changes to engine sound. Now I don't really bother.

I'll have to be a bit more careful as I might miss something though smile...you learn to relax with these things and just drive...

injectors are noisy but tappets are noiser still when the oil isn't reaching them as normal

Apparently Italian tune up is needed and after warming up I drove mine hard and the sound went. All cars benefit from a blow out every once and while
