Boxster 987.1 Brakes
Discussion
Hi All,
I have a 2005 Boxster 987.1 (2.7L tiptronic). Brake wear indicator has come on so my Qs are as follows:
1) the brake wear indicator has come on the dashboard but it doesn't state which wear indicator(s) have triggered. Will an OBD reader of any description tell me which wheel it is or do i have to check myself? I replaced my front pads ~15k miles ago so thinking it could be the rears... but given how hard the car has been driven it wouldn't surprise me either way.
2) i want to check the discs at same time as they haven't been changed in the time i've owned the car (18k miles under my ownership). I can feel a slight lip but what is the technical way to do this? My understanding is I could use a micrometer (explain method if so?) to test the thickness to a high degree of accuracy but what are the thicknesses for new discs (front and rear) and their respective wear limits?
I'll replace everything myself that needs doing.. it's just a question of what needs doing now vs later

Hi, I'm just going through the same process on s 2005 3.2S
I've had a wear indicator warning coming on erroneously for a while. There's enough left on the pads, but the discs are knackered and I suspect there's a possibility that the lip on the discs may be catching the wear sensor. I'm in the process of replacing all four discs and front and rear pads, but I'm going to re-use the sensors and see if the dash light stays off afterwards. If not, I'll renew the sensors.
I'm using Brembos all round, I like the fact that the vanes and mounting areas are all properly finished off, hopefully meaning they'll remain in aesthetically decent condition for a while. I got the rear discs and pads for £158 delivered from ECP on one of their deals. The fronts were out of stock on there, but a local factors has the front discs for £60 each, which is cheap. I'm still looking for front pads at sensible money, but there's no hurry for them at the mo, I won't be using the car for a little while.

Following...as just about to order front discs/pads for my 987S.
Was considering this (I get 10% off) but not sure what brand they are ....Textar?

Must check out the Bembro option. I'm interested in the mount area finish as my exiting fronts looks like new there but the rears are lightly rusting so need a refinish.

Must check out the Bembro option. I'm interested in the hub finish as my exiting fronts looks fine but the rears are going brown so would prefer having to refinish.

I believe Textar may be the OEM for the 987 but don't take my word for it.. just something i remember from many years back. You can get various other brands/types of pad which may be designed for more intense applications i.e. have higher operating temperatures for aggressive/track useWas considering this (I get 10% off) but not sure what brand they are ....Textar?

Regards the disc wear limits surely someone here can send you the 987 Boxster service manual pdf.
I've got one for the Cayman (6000 pages) and all that stuff is listed.
I picked up my front Brembo drilled and vented discs this morning and paid £120.60. Happy with that. Just need to source sensibly priced front pads now and that's everything I need. So far I've got front and rear discs and rear pads for £270. You can do it for less, but I wanted Brembo.
