A guy offered me a trade in against another car.
Its a 2000my 3.2S, bodywork/paint is good, wheels could do with a refurb interior very clean. Car has done 200 miles since the last mot and in that time has had a partial gearbox rebuild (2nd gear synchro) new LUK clutch, air con condenser & rads, water pipes front to rear, stainless manifolds along with various suspension arms/joints. It currently has no mot which ran out in Jan this year.
The downside is the engine is leaking water into number 5 cylinder. The way I looked at it is its either remove the engine and heads and investigate either head gasket or recon heads or replace the complete engine with a used unit.
In my opinion the car is borderline breaking for parts or possible repair.
I offered £1K for it.
Did I insult him? coffee

An engine rebuild on these starts at £3.6 k but more likely in range £5~10k. Market value for a very good one would be £10k but more likely £5-7k.

Therefore, from a purely financial standpoint, and assuming it really needs engine rebuilt and that you have the work by third parties, you've already bid too high!

Wow, they've just spent all that money on it to find it needs the engine done...

I can imagine they're not happy.

But you've offered a decent amount for it.

The last one I was involved with came in at £2,200 and was in good working order, with 110,000 miles.

A guy from Germany bought it.

I think I'm right in saying these occasionally crack the heads, might be worth bearing in mind if so.

Thanks for the replies.
Yes, spent thousands on it to find the most important part of the car needs major work.
Re financial point of view, I can't see it being worth more than £5k fully repaired with an mot.
I offered £1k for it to do the deal on another car but had my doubts if it was even worth that but we thought about just selling it on as is if the repair wasn't viable.
The guy was trying to take into account the money already spent and I understand his predicament but as I explained the major engine problem made the car worth little more than a breaker. It still runs and drives but looking at the coolant looks as though there's plenty of block sealant in there.
He wanted £2.5k for it but got the hump with my offerirkedirked

I've come across a few early 2.5's with bad engines for around the £900 mark. For context.
