I am looking for a nicely specced 3.4 GTS Pdk Boxster but nothing over the last couple of months has come up that I fancy, I do like the look of and the idea of the new 4.0 but this purchase is really only to fill a gap and wont be my main car so buying a new one isn't really an option. So I have been looking for a 3.4 GTS but finding one with a half decent spec is proving a touch more difficult than I thought, I have however been offered a 718 GTS with the 4 pot motor, I initially dismissed due to the fact it isn't a 6 cylinder but was talking to a guy the other day and he was raving about it.

I have not actually driven a 981 GTS 3.4 either but previously owned a 981 Spyder that in all honestly frustrated me mainly because of the lack of zing from the engine at the top end and the long gearing, just wondering if anyone has gone from a Spyder down to a 3.4 and how it felt and any views on how the 2.5 compares to them both.

I haven't driven the GTS4.0 but I have have owned a 981 Boxster S followed by six weeks in a 718 S with the 2.5 4-pot motor. After which I got another 981S. Mine is as close to being a GTS without having the small power upgrade, but I did test drive a couple of 918 GTSs while I still had the 718S.

My own thoughts were that the 4-cylinder motor sounded great, and the power and torque from it were fantastic. But I really missed the character and sound of the flat size which is why I got another 981. But I REALLY liked the 718 as I think it looks miles better than the 981, so if there had been a flat six 718 at the time I would have found a way to make it happen. In fact I still plan to as soon as I can, finances permitting. There's nothing wrong with the four but there's nothing better than the six!

Drive one - I think you'll be surprised, but all of us are different and your wants will be different to the next guy or girl.

I have a late 2019 718GTS 2.5 and am worried that the 4.0 will be a disappointment, performance wise. Sounds don't mean that much to me, and are certainly not the be all and end all. I have a year to decide what to swap it for. 992? 718GTS 4.0?

If it's that good why not keep it?

Because variety is the spice and all that, so why not. If they were continuing to make the 2.5GTS I'd not hesitate to have another.

thanks chaps, will see if anything comes up for sale over the next couple of weeks, think I would prefer the 6cylinder even if it is slower just for the noise. anyone thinking of selling drop me a message.

if you owned a Spyder and it frustrated you what makes you think that a less powerful engine with the same gearing won't frustrate you more?

I’m not going for the same gearbox I’m looking for a pdk and I had read the 3.4 is obviously less powerful but more peaky, my original question is asking for people to comment who had driven them to advise how they compared which I would be interested in hearing .

I bought a new Boxster S in 2011 and did almost 50,000 miles. I bought a 2015 Spyder and am now on about 15,000 in that. I had a 718 GTS 2.5na and sold at 4,000 miles. I have a 718 GTS 4.0 now at 2,000 miles.
The 2.5 car was brilliant in all respects, as they all are, except for the engine. I tried to love the car and wanted to love the car but couldn't. Life's too short to put up and make do, so I sold it . I was very happy with the 2011 car and sold it to a mate who is still very happy with it. I am very happy with my Spyder and my 4.0 GTS.
My Spyder has more top end fizz now than it did at 5k miles....perhaps they free up ??
I don't really buy in to the 'long gearing problem' .... just go faster ????

I went from a 2.7 Boxster to a 2.0T a couple of years back. So far I’ve kept the 2.0 longer than I originally had the 2.7 which to be honest I found a bit gutless. The easily accessible power and turbo torque is great fun and I’ve found I didn’t miss the soundtrack, I even like the rougher sound of the F4, especially if you unplug the sound aktor fuse.

I shouldn’t really be talking these up, as I’m hoping to grab a cheap 2.5 GTS next year if they remain out of favour...

I wouldn't worry too much.
You'll be safe enough getting a well priced 2.5 GTS next year smile

May even consider a T model to get the extra spec although OPC prices are defying gravity on these in my view, as usual.

Would be nice to get the extra power of the 2.5 engine though.

I know the OP posted about Boxsters but if you want to get serious about losing your license (I'm not) and like black (I don't) buy this and map it. It's been on for a good while and is a £50k car IMO.

Blimey thats good value you for money if you don't mind about the engine etc. Platinum Silver wheels would change the look of that.

Exactly, especially with the yellow calipers. Been on sale for months...photos are from late summer I think.

Friends got a mapped 718S with buckets and even though it's not my thing it's bloody good value for money compared to the competition.

Noticed this 2.5 GTS on a facebook group today...no idea if it's decent but looking at AutoTrader very few private ones listed. I can only assume he got a terrible part-ex price on the new car ordered..
