Before what will hopefully be a long summer of driving, I plan to do a minor service myself. The car will still be serviced at a specialist when it next requires one in around 5k miles, but I think it's good practice to change the oil a bit more regularly on my cars.
Obviously I know the Porsche recommended is 0W-40 /5W-40 /5W-50, I am more curious as to what brands owners may be using, my presumption being Mobil.

Thanks

They don't seem to do exciting oil-threads on PH - that was more Rennlist's speciality hehe

I don't mind answering your specific question, but everyone has their favourite.

As you are doing an extra change (sensible IMO), then it almost doesn't matter, as long as you do a tiny bit of research.

If you want to get into oil then you need to understand the best version of the oil, and by that I mean the content other than the oil itself.
A good starting point would be the ACEA codes and the API letters.

I suggest you DYOR,

Or just visit Opie, do the minimal research and choose from Castrol Shell Mobil Fuchs Motul or Comma - yes Comma - depending on how much you want to spend.

Thank you! I'll go and do a bit of research. Oil is something I would certainly get into given the time! After all without oil your ICE isn't very useful

Totally.... but the older the car, the more difficult it gets. Oil formulations change over time, as the emissions targets have constantly been made more stringent for each new generation of engine.

So for instance certain elements that were used in oil 20 years ago are not allowed in the same quantities today - but your 987 has probably escaped the worst of it.

If you ever suffer from insomnia, look up ZDDP.

Have used Fuch Titan Race Pro S in my 987 2.7 for the last 7 years for countless blasts across Europe, not the cheapest but seems very smooth and revvy with that stuff.

I too have been using the Fuchs Pro S 05-40 for some years in a 986 and a 996. It is a fifth generation oil (single grade/ multi/ semi synthetic/ synthetic/ ester) so a generation on from Mobil 1. It is not a Porsche Approved oil, the approval process is expensive for the oil manufacturer. Also I believe it contains higher levels of PDwhatsits (see above) than approved oils. On the basis that what goes in comes out of the back it would not help with emissions criteria so manufacturers will not use such oils these days. There are other ester oils but I have not used them.

I’ve got a 987.1, 2.7, 2005 model and have used Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40 - 5Ltr.

Last time paid about £57 for 2 x 5 Ltrs from Euro car parts.
