Bought a 981 Spyder as couldn’t wait for a Boxster 718 GTS 4.0. It had 8000 mikes in it when I bought it and now on 9500. I haven’t seen one with more than 15000 miles. Am I mad thinking that I might put 50000 miles on it over the next 5 years? I want to use it but seems that no one else does. Will it be unsellable?

Yes you are mad. Put it in a sealed box, and hope that you may or may not lose or gain something transient called 'money'.

No, you are not mad to want to use and enjoy your car. And no it won't be unsaleable. However, it will be worth less than lower mileage cars.

Cost per mile, in terms of depreciation, will reduce the more you use the car.

Enjoy yourself and please post photos, I love the Spyder!

Use it, I can’t afford one. There will come a time when you can’t have one, so use it while you can.

Use it, enjoy it. Fretting about how the miles you put on a car affects its value is rather missing the point of why you buy one.

I just put an example spyder into the magnitude finance calculator.

If you do 6000 miles per annum the residual value after 5 years came out at £21.5k and if you did 10,000 miles per annum it drops to £19.5k.

Therefore they are pricing the extra 20,000 miles at 10ppm, which seems pretty good to me. Drive it and enjoy the memories.

Nb this wasn’t planned as a debate on the actual residual value, rather how they price the extra mileage, and I would guess at the moment they are erring on the side of caution.

Enjoy the car. It not an investment. Think of the fun memories and that engine noise!

The only time my cars get a respray or alloy wheels refurbished is the month before being sold

Why are you worried about it being unsaleable , I dont undestand surely you have bought it to enjoy ? not worry about pointless stuff

Life can get in the way of driving these cars.
My daughter was born just before i took delivery of my spyder in mar 16. She was a surprise so driving had to take a back seat.
V Busy with work as well.so lack of time as well.

Dont want to use the car in awful weather.
So only 5500 miles in 5 years.

I will take the car to the coast this weekend all being well.

But it is frustrating. Wish i had the car earlier in my life.

Enjoy it, put the mileage on it, maintain it on schedule. Regular cleaning and polishing helps too, as a nice example will always sell if and when you decide to do so.....!

Unreal isn't it. However, there are plenty of pointless threads on pistonheads asking more or less the same thing so I guess I am the weird one for wanting to use a car that I have bought.

When Gov first restricted our movements using a motor vehicle, last year sometime, I SORNed four of our worthless cars but kept the 993 taxed. Used it to go to the supermarket, plus a few small tasks for the NHS/SJA. Amazingly it works in poor weather.

Unless you’re a multi car collector, I’d say use it. It’s a nice car, but it’s not a DB5.

If it’s not driven you’ll still have to maintain it and you’ll miss out on all the fun!

Quite embarrassingly my 981 Spyder has only covered just over 2,100 miles......
I bought it at just under 3 years old with just 970 miles, the idea was to use it as a weekend / fun car. My issues are 2 car mad boys who sadly can’t both come out in it with me at the same time, other cars to use for daily duties etc, then Covid hit and all plans of road trips went on pause! So it’s now MOT’d and ready for some use this summer once we can all move around freely again.
I have to say, mileage and the impact of them on its value are the last of my considerations!
Roll on sunshine and freedom out of lockdown

Just imho ......

Bought my 987.2 Spyder in 2011 with 700 miles on the clock - 10 years later it's just clicked over 124,500 miles.

I have loved every single one of them - when I die I will look back at it as the most fun car I have ever owned.

It's my 24/7/365 daily ..... Residuals, polishing, cleaning, con-coursing, owners clubbing and all the usual ownership stuff holds no interest for me - these cars are built for driving.

Drive it

So much fun.

Mine has 28k miles on it now. Between lockdowns last year put 3k miles on it touring around Europe with my daughter. Some of my best motoring memories.
The more fun miles I put on it the better!
