Yet another GTS / GT4 question
Discussion
I’m planning on buying a new sports car in 2023, and my first choice would be a Cayman GT4.
I’ve spoken to my local Porsche franchise, and they’re willing to take a deposit to be fourth on the waitlist for a 2023 GT4, if it happens. This year they were allocated eleven cars.
Alternatively, they have one GTS allocation available for Q4 of this year. This is sooner than I planned and not the car I really want, but it is a real guaranteed allocation.
My logic is that Porsche will make some form of 4-litre Cayman next year, so I should take my chance with the waitlist.
Am I being foolish? Should I stick or twist?

When you test drove both, which did you prefer? surely the answer lies there.I’ve spoken to my local Porsche franchise, and they’re willing to take a deposit to be fourth on the waitlist for a 2023 GT4, if it happens. This year they were allocated eleven cars.

I haven’t driven a GT4 - local dealer doesn’t have any, other dealers won’t sell me a new one. Maybe I should pose as a used buyer and try to test a used GT4 somewhere else.
This would be for a fun car that sees a few track days a year. In the past, whenever I’ve upgraded to a more driver-focussed spec I’ve never regretted it.

you haven't even tried one? Yes you should at the very least go test drive a GT4, plenty for sale to test drive. Find a dealer with a GTS and GT4 and test them drive back to back, then say you'll sleep on it. The two dealers i’ve spoken to both said the GT4 isn’t open for forward orders as it’s being discontinued at the end of 2022. I ended up ordering a GTS, which like your offer is being delivered in Q4. Be careful, come dealers will happily take your money as a deposit in the expectation that can swap you into another model.
FWIW, the GT4 is a tougher car to use every day, i’ve had a Spyder which is practically the same and it was a challenge given i couldn’t get onto my driveway easily, couldn’t use multi storey car parks, get over speed bumps etc. It became a bit tiring, although all being equal i’d get a GT4 because my usage/needs have changed a bit since then, as has my house.

Having read all the horror stories on here I was honestly expecting to be rejected for the GT4 everywhere I asked, and was taken by surprise when the local dealer said they’d take a deposit.
You did the correct thing, if you don’t ask you certainly won’t get. TBH 4th on the wait list is not a bad place to be, you could easily move up and getting a car this year is unlikely but not impossible. I’d be tempted to put the deposit down and continue to phone around, you may find another better slot. The GT4 is special, will put a smile on your face even on the days you don’t get into it and an even bigger smile on the days that you do.

I’ve got some catching up to do with my research.
There is a huge difference between taking your deposit and actually getting a car. The strategy of far too many sales people is get a deposit, wait, tell you that you can't get a GT4 but they can get you something else.I’ve got some catching up to do with my research.

Spot on, I wasn’t asked to put any money down until they confirmed a real gt4 allocation. You hear horror stories of people having 5k or even 10k deposits down for cars which never come. Tread carefully.
