Evening all - has anyone hear done the Apple Car Play upgrade on a 981 that a well known independent Porsche dealer is offering for around £800 - it appears to be a good modification?

You not interested in the new PCCM+ for the 981?

Hi - thanks - can you enlighten me on that? I have only just returned to 981 ownership so am not up with the latest.

Just picked up my 981 this afternoon after having the Mr12volt CarPlay mod fitted

It’s a clever system and spoofs the TV module on PCM 3.1 so you select the TV source and it then allows either CarPlay or Android Auto to be selected.

Only driven him c.30 miles but does exactly what I expected and brings the infotainment up to date.

Much cheaper than the Porsche system

Sounds a bit steep tbh! I also have Mr12Volt and it cost less than half that!

I did the wireless CarPlay upgrade to my PCM3.1 7 years ago. It has been the most stable CarPlay of all the systems I’ve used. It transformed my experience driving the car as a daily and is the reason I still have the car.

I have a Taycan as well. I can’t use the wireless connection because it drops out. This is due to the insulated glass. But, it’s ironic my 2013 Cayenne has better connectivity than my Taycan.

I’m not going to recommend the system I have because lots has changed in the market. What I can share is that I paid $372 for the kit in 2019. I used to build PCs which made the install very easy. I’ve had to take it in and out several times, due to PCM issues, and can now do the upgrade in minutes.

Good timing as Porsche themselves has released a brand new head unit that brings the 981 (and 991) up to modern day standards. More info at:

https://www.porsche.com/uk/accessoriesandservice/c...

With the other options you have, you will always end up with the same screen resolution. The new one improves on every factor.

Not many features on it yet being so new. There is a video of an installation here which at around 6mins 30s walks through the features:

and a forum of a user's install with some pics:

Thats your best bet in my opinion.

The Porsche system is lovely, but it is a lot of money. I think they quoted something like £1800+VAT on the linked video. Not sure it is an easy DIY fit and they had to order loads of additional parts to complete the install.

The Mr12Volt (and similar) systems are under £400 inc VAT. Fitting involves opening the PCM 3.1 head unit and fitting a new PCB, as well as connecting all the harness and MOST optical connectors behind the unit. I opted to get it fitted (I was also getting cruise control retro fitted which needs coding) which was a reasonable cost - much less than a third of the Porsche system fitted.

I am likely to have the Porsche PCCM+ upgrade on my 991. I've had a fairly wide range of costs from Porsche to fit it - around £2,500 fitted is the rough cost. I am waiting until my local dealer have done a few of them before taking mine in.

Because I have a year of my warranty left, it would need to be fitted by Porsche - and would need to be that system rather than the cheaper 12volt alternative.

I want it chiefly for Waze and Spotify - along with getting rid of an iPhone on the vents or wherever.

Absolutely makes sense on a car with Porsche warranty

I had Mr12volt solution in my 981 for circa 18 months and it was brilliant. Easy DIy install if you can follow instructions and worked wirelessly which annoyingly my new 718 doesn’t.

Recommended.

I went down the Isudar route with my 981 - only £170 (https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B09Z1YJB72?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_1) and a couple of hours to fit. Yes a little scary opening up the head unit and plugging some new cables in but it worked great. Also added a reversing camera at the same time (that was a fiddly job having to remove about 12 pieces of trim) and of course the bumper but well worth it.

Had the unit for about 18 months before selling the car and the only issue I ever had was about twice when it wouldn’t connect automatically and I had to go through BT settings and force the connection. Other than that it was great.
