After a long layoff the fuel dial on my 1989 930 is indicating just under half full but does not move from this point until I switch off the ignition whereat it drops off to zero.
I have removed the immersion indicator tube from the top of the fuel tank and checked the connections, they all seem to be ok.
Question: Should I hear anything sliding up or down the indicator tube such as a float of some sort?
If something is stuck inside the tube, can I undo the lock nut on the base of the tube and free it?
Is there anything I can service on this immersion tube?

Just wanted to check if any of you guys had a similar experience before I buy a new sensor.

I am pretty sure that it is the sensor rather than the gauge because when I unplug the cable from the top of the sensor the gauge does not indicate anything when the ignition is on.

Regards.

I'll answer my own query so this post can be closed.
I decided to go for a new unit which took only 3 days to arrive after placing order with Design 911 UK. And it now works fine.
There is a float inside which is clearly audible as it slides up and down the sensor tube, so if you can't hear this on your unit then it is most definitely stuck. It is quite a fragile unit so if it is shaken in an attempt to free it then it probably won't do it any good at all.
Luckily my gauge was showing almost half a tank full when the ignition was energised and zero when switched off so I assumed the gauge was not at fault. If however your gauge does not move at all when the ignition is on then I would first suspect the gauge, it is unlikely that the float has stuck at the bottom of the tube unless the tank had been drained and left for a long period empty, even then I would have expected some gauge movement.
