I have been looking at selling/px my GT3 for a modified 356. Fell in love with the Emory style Outlaw . I saw a beautiful 356 at the Brighton speed trials . Has anyone on the forum gone down this route and any thoughts. Thanks

Good Evening - if you're looking to buy a 356 "outlaw" - I have a car which has been in complete bare metal restoration for almost two years and will be finished in the next couple of weeks which I'm considering selling. It's based on some of the Emory outlaw cars I've admired over the years.

Slate Grey -new interior with GT seats finished in Hounds tooth check - half roll cage - full engine rebuild -lowered suspension - harnesses- etc etc etc - just being prepared for feature in "Classic Porsche " magazine and now almost a "new" car !

I've had a lot of Porsches including a 997 GT3 ( and twenty seven other 911's) and seventeen 356's, so to answer your original question - they are (obviously) extremely different cars and personally I find the early cars (356 and 911) far more interesting to drive and a lot more of an "event". I always felt the newer cars could almost drive themselves and have so many driver "features" you almost don't need to be there ! I recall an article in the 356 Registry some years ago which summed it up with the comment "It's more fun to drive a slow car fast than to drive a fast car slow" !

Feel free to drop me a line if you'd like any details of my car

I have been toying with the idea of selling my 997GT3 and changing to something completely different......but I keep thinking I will regret it. Even when I have not driven it for a while I can't wait to get back in the seat.

Whenever I am behind the wheel, the feeling I get driving the car vanquishes any thoughts of selling it......then those thoughts reappear when I am away from it and I start thinking......'what else would I like to drive' biggrin

I don't know if swapping to a 356 is good or bad idea, I don't know if selling a GT3 is a good or bad idea, I just know that whatever you (or I) change to, it has to give that same feeling when behind the wheel.

Sorry don't know how to post photos but four pages of details of the restoration on this DDK thread

http://www.ddk-online.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=2...

Also if you view "D C Customs" facebook page and scroll down photos of my 356 on there and expanded on "356 album" first photos are just under the orange Fiat 500 which is also mine and being restored ( probably resprayed in slate grey !) to Abarth spec' !

Sng45 - that's a fantastic resto you are having undertaken

What's always shocking is when you take the paint of a "good car" just how much work is actually required - in this case I guess it will top 1,500 hours...

sng45 - thanks for posting the resto thread on ddk . I went to look at the car when PO was selling - nice guy , and car was mechanically good , plenty spent on engine , car's price seemed reasonable and was negotiable. I was not keen on the patina and 'rally' features however and would have ended up wanting it repainted , which maybe was what started you off !

ssute - think I have responded to a post you made on the PCGB 356 forum , and suggested you check out resto threads on DDK , hopefully you caught up with the one referenced here , because it is a good education for anyone considering a 356 resto project . NB Even California cars rot .

Getting back to the original question about replacing a 997GT3 with an outlaw 356 .
My Porsche 'upgrade path' which took place over a few decades was 356B super 90 , 993C2 , 996C2 , 997C2S ....which would have led to GT3 . However between the 996 and the 997 I got a 964RS to do track days in , and was reminded how mechanical and involving the old 356 was.
I sold the 997C2S , sold the 964RS when it became too precious to track , replaced by buying a hardcore 964 C2 lightweight to track , and bought a RHD 356C to tour around the roads with.

Now given up tracking , sold 964 C2 lightweight to a hillclimb/sprint man , and found an OUTLAW 356 based on a 1955 Continental ( pre A ) . It has an edgy look and is edgy to drive , no way near as fast or comfortable as a modern water cooled Porsche with aircon , but it has the spirit of Porsche !

The modern cars were made in large numbers and I am surprised how the value of secondhand GT3s have rocketed , you can only use the performance in limited circumstances eg tracks , and they are readily available . If you are thinking of selling maybe now would be a good time while prices are up , market has cooled off since last year.

If you want a good 356 there are few of them - much fewer if you want RHD , so may take a while . If you want an Emory Outlaw I would start by contacting Rod as maybe one of his customers is thinking of a change .
