I am almost at the end of an 18 month restoration of my 1986 Supersport Targa 911.

Looking online the only tyres that seem to be recommended are Michelin - 245/45ZR16 SX MXX3 N2's ... Would anyone here know if this is the case and I should suck it up and pay for 4 new tyres at 300+ or is there a slightly more reasonable alternative?

Don't want to cut corners but seems quite a lot for 16 inch tyres!!!

On the positive the new tyres get to go on these refurbished alloys which came back a few weeks ago -

Ahhh the Supersport; how I miss mine.

If you must fit ancient tyres, Camskill for example still have the Contis at 91 GBP each. Personally I'd fit R888s which are expensive at 196 GBP but will probably even be better than the ancient Contis in the wet hehe

The problem is the lack of choice in 245x45x16

Michelin, Continenatal Sport Contacts or Toyo (possibly Khumo too). I use the contis and have been happy, friends use the toyos which are about the same price.

Don't need to worry about being n rated which helps.

Thanks for thoughts! I had thought it might have to have been on Michelin which cheapest I can find are 308 per tyre!!

I'll order continentals today if they are acceptable to use!

Thanks!

I don't know about tyre choices but I assume that is a 9x16 wheel?

Have a look at Pirelli's they are very reasonable. 3.2's used to run Pirelli 6000 I think the replacements are 7000 or something like that. Should be around £280 for four including vat at my best guess.

Why do you think you *have* to fit a specific tyre to any car? Do you mean N-rating? I'm fairly sure that in 1986 there was no such thing, and even today you do not *have* to fit N-rated tyres to any Porsche. Of course Porsche might try and insist you do so to make money out of you, and it's tied-up with their warranty, but in 1986 Porsche was a very different animal.

Thanks SRT - will order up today!

orangecurry - googling what tyres it would have had when built, it looked like Michelin were the tyre to go for but they are extortionate and no doubt no better than an equivalent premium tyre brand hence the query....

thanks for help! car only a few weeks from being complete (i hope) and looking forward to see it again! cheers!
