Porsche 928 or Porsche 944?
Discussion
Hi All, I am new to the forum and apologise for a question that has been asked before but back in 2011.
I have always wanted a Porsche and am thinking of getting one as a weekend thing.
My budget is up to 11k and see that I can either get a 944 or possibly a 928?
I love the look of the 928 but see that I will probably be getting a higher mileage (circ 140-150k) one for my budget. So what's your advice, lower mileage 944 in better condition or follow my heart and go 928?
Any help is most appreciated.
Phil

A 928 is more scary from costs. A 944 is more of a sports car.I have always wanted a Porsche and am thinking of getting one as a weekend thing.

Both are very nice though.
I went through this dilemma. Driving purists urged me to go 944S2 or 968. I went for a manual 928, there’s a sense of occasion about them and they’re brilliant. But you’ll always be spending on them, have no illusions there.
That said, the spend is usually less (or thereabouts) than what you’d lose in a car that actually depreciates. I was recently in a 944 that had done over half a million miles under its belt with not much more than a couple of gasket changes.
As I type I can’t help but lean towards the 944, they’re a fantastic car. Probably because I’ve scratched the 928 itch though.

Thanks for the advice, that leans me towards the 944... I guess that a car that ends up costing loads to keep, fix and maintain can easily help you fall out of love with them? That said, I can't help but adore the shape of the 928... It's got to be one of the nicest looking Porsches ever. Thanks again.
There is a sadness about spending thousands, picking it up and loving it whilst considering what you want to do next. But that’s classic ownership for you. I’m not saying a 944 is cheap, but it would be cheaper and I daresay more visceral. But you’d never live that V8 sense of occasion.
I've owned a 944 turbo and a 928 S4 at the same time (still have the S4)
The 944 turbo is more of a sports car, the 928 is more of a GT car. In hindsight, i should have kept the turbo.
That said, the 951 is a completely different animal to a regular 944 so If you're choosing between a regular 944 over a 928, I would go for the 928.

I have owned both (an early 2.5 944 and currently a 1989 928 S4)
case for 944
More nimble, esp on tighter roads
lighter and feels it
Much cheaper model specific parts, generally
Less complicated
Approx 8mpg more fuel efficient - much more so in town, by very high speed the 928 is more efficient due to gearing (at steady 100mph S4 does 20mpg)
case for 928
Feels much more special in and out (inside very airy esp with light trim and extended leather), more positive public reaction & rarer
Even more solid
V8 sound
Handling on a well set up one is still fabulous - on a flowing fast road its great
More practical (yes!) - slightly bigger in the back and i can fit my mountain bike in the boot!
Obviously much quicker straight line, esp above 100
Because both are excellent cars there are many tatty ones around with big mileages. For the 928 especially look for one that's had the hard work (radiator, water pump, engine mounts, flex plate adjusted/checked regularly etc done).
If it was against a standard 944 it's 928 every time for me. Much harder with a 944 turbo or 968 club sport - i'd go for the best individual example. Good luck!

So much to think about... Looking at the general prices I am a little concerned that I might only achieve 5/10 Porsche 928 for 99% of my budget which will leave me without the ability to get things fixed when something goes a miss. With the 944 prices being more reasonable perhaps it's a better, safer proposition?
Still prefer the 928 though...
Thanks to everyone for your insight, it is much appreciated.

I'm another who's had both. I've had 928 GT, 944 Lux, and 944 Turbo (250)
They're all great cars, if you pick a good one you really won't be disappointed. The 928 is definitely more 'GT' than sports car, and the 944 Lux will feel very underpowered if you're used to modern performance. At this budget, I think I'd be looking for a well sorted 944 S2 for the best all road balance.

Hi I honestly don't know a thing about 968? (Not that I know that much about 944's or 928's apart from they look ace and remind me of days gone by. Is the 968 a good choice? If so, please tell me your thoughts...
Thanks a million
Phil
The 968 shares a lot with the 944 S2 but is also quite heavily revised. The engine has some trickery and there is a 928 style front end. Your money would be very safe in one of those, I would think, as they are really quite rare. Thanks a million
