Looking to get back into 911 ownership and have found a good example of both the above. The carrera has more miles but is in better cosmetic shape (interior) the SC is my prefered colour combination. The carrera has a whale tail with rear window wipe which i would want to remove.
Which would be the better ownership experience (maintenance, costs etc) and how much to convert the whale tail to a flat back?
Thanks in advance.

I've driven many examples of both of these over the years, and I always find the SC disappointing. I know there isn't much difference on paper, but the 3.2 Carrera always seems a much better drive than the SC.

For me, I think the SC was probably one of the low points of 911 development.

One other question. Is it worth having a pre purchase inspection?

absolutely. Do not buy without, unless you really know what you are looking at

Any 80s 911 is super old now. Spec / mileage etc are practically irrelevant, buy on condition!

This is in the workshop at the moment (also for sale). Oil tank on it has pitted at the top so has a slight weep. Just waiting for a replacement now.

Viewing the Carrera tomorrow. If it's the one then I will want to remove the whale tail. Any recommendations who to speak to in the surrey/berks area re this? I know Tognola from a previous car and I'm aware of GT one.

I took the whale tail off my 88 targa and put it into the loft of the garage. That way it could be swapped back. Bought flat lid and had it sprayed to match the rest of the car. Unbolting the wing and welding up the holes is an option but probably won't come much cheaper than a good second hand flat lid.

Thanks for replies. I am now the happy owner of an artic silver 88 3.2 carrera targa. Currently having the whale tail removed, 4 new tyres and a few other bits done before I start enjoying.
