Good Morning All.

Just taken me 1987 3.2 Porsche 911 out for the usual Sunday run out, and smoke started coming out from the heater vents on the dash board, it seemed to happen more when you put your foot down.

can any one advise me of this issue please.

I had this with my 3.2 and it was coming from the heater blower fan on top of the engine.

Hi Joh

Do you know the cost it had cost you?

Or it was the blower under the bonnet.

The under bonnet blower was a £400 part from Porsche. Or you can take it apart and replace the motor only for about £70 from type 911.

I did it myself and am mechanically inept.

My problem was with the blower motor on top of the engine. It is part no. 965 624 151 00 and in 1993 it cost £130.50 + 17.5% VAT! It is item 1 on illustration 108-10 on the Porsche on line parts catalogue described as "Additional blower- blower". I see that Design 911 sell them for £129 (OEM) or £694.68 (Porsche). It fits a few generations of air-cooled cars.

There are also blower motors in both footwells in a 3.2 I think so they could also fail. If it is the one at the back I imagine that the smoke will come out evenly across the vents, if a footwell blower it will be to one side I suppose.

You will need to check if the motors are working as it is also possible to get exhaust smoke in the system through the heat exchangers. You would know the difference in the smell!

The smoke is only coming from the two centre air vents on the dash, not the outer vents each side of the dash.

The heater blower is quite easy to remove, it lives under the scuttle in the luggage compartment. Remove it and do a bench test on it to see what’s causing the smoke. Quite possibly the fan resistor is on its way out.

Yes it's to do with the fresh air blower as the centre vents are not part of the heating system, something I miss in the water cooled cars.

As said above then, get a new motor and fit.

Porsche don’t sell the motor on its own, so you have to else where. It’s quite a common failure as they get older.

There used to be a thread on impactbumpers with photos.
