Great thing with Collecting Cars is you can look up cars that sold.

This Porsxhe 964 C4 sold on 24 April for £66,501+fees and is now up at a dealer for £79,995.

That's quite a potential mark-up for the dealer in 2 weeks.

On an old car such as that I don't think thats too excessive. With fees that was potentially a 70k car, not worked it out but I imagine there or thereabouts. So a 10k mark up on a 70k investment. With the consumer rights act and how bills can rack up on these cars I would want that sort of mark up at least to cover the risks.

Yeah, he would have paid £70 with the fees.

He will sell that for £79k maybe? Pay HMRC £1500 vat, leaving £7500 to warranty the car and do any work needed to prep for sale.

Not a risk I would take on a 35 year old 115k mile Porsche.

In addition to the points above, he will have had to prep it and who knows what jobs needed doing?

Maybe it needed a clutch, suspension, brakes, tyres etc etc?

Anything in this price range has to have 15% or so mark up I think to cover costs, finance, warranty, some prep and hopefully profit. On cheaper 911s my guess is nearer 20%

Some they win on some they won't and these aren't fast movers it could be in stock 6 months

So he’s potentially got about £10k to prep the car, provide a warranty, transport and pay any fees/duty, pay his staff, his storage or showroom utilities and rent, advertising costs, company vehicles, insurances, legal fees or retainer, etc, etc.

Personally I wouldn’t take financial risks like that, it’s too close to the bone given the amount of legal protection consumers have even if “sold as seen”, one recall under warranty and you could end up under water on that.

Providing the dealer is prepared to stand by the car and offer decent post sale support then I really don't think that's bad at all.

Less than I would have expected
