3.2 carrera with 915 gearbox
Discussion
I know the g50 is more ‘robust’ but the 915 is lighter and also the same as the box from a 2.7rs but mated to a more powerful 3.2 litre engine. What’s not to like? I’m new to this world but want authentic ‘long bonnet’ driving dynamics but in a more modern looking shell. Is the 3.2 circa 1985 the car for me?
I’ve enjoyed fairly extensive experience with both, in several different 911s, including 18 years with a 915 in an M471 2.7RSL. And, in the ‘80s, I daily’d an ‘83 SC in London.
It’s not an easy gearbox, needs the selector mechanism setting up accurately, it’s deliberately slow, which suits the older Porsches, and better in LHD than RHD.
Also, IMO the aftermarket quick/short shifts do not improve the 915.
However, I have enormous affection for the 3.2 Carrera, and much prefer the G50 evolution. It’s slicker, quicker and more enjoyable. And the hydraulic clutch is much lighter.
In fact, i definitely think the later 1987-1989 G50 3.2 is a better car overall.
But, that is reflected in pricing - and with the passage of time, an exceptional and cared for 915 3.2 might be a better buy than a tired and neglected G50.

I read loads about the 915 Vs G50 boxes before getting an SC with the 915 box. A bad 915 box is a naff experience in fairness but a box that isn't knackered combined with a well set up linkage is great fun. Mine is still a little stiff when cold but shifts very well once warmed up. The harder you drive it the better it gets. Don't forget while the G50 is more robust it's much more expensive to rebuild (and heavier). Buy the best car you can and enjoy whichever transmission you end up with !
I bought a 915 equipped 3.2 from Nick Faure in the early 90's and even then people had it in for the 915.
I asked Nick for advice and he said "remember there's a neutral" which I took to mean not to rush it.
That car's gearbox was still good when at sold the car at 180,000 miles and I still remember the frisson of excitement changing from 5th to 4th at speed. Reverse is opposite 5th and there isn't a spring to help you.
The 915 is the last proper Porsche gearbox, perhaps until the PDK. There will be other opinions! The car is a little lighter, not just because of the 915 but because the later the car the heavier they get. A 915 car iis apparently a little quicker too, all other things being equal.
Don't be put off by the 915 gearbox, I think it's more authentic Porsche experience but whether I would like it now after 20 odd years and a PDK I can't say.
As you may gather, I have a opinion on this matter but if you want to buy a 3.2, overall condition is what matters.
