The 488 hazards come on the dash under hard (ish) braking

Now im wondering what this looks like to drivers behing you?

Do the hazards just come on or pulsate or is the brake lights that pulsate?

Id be very interested if anyone had a video of what it looks like....i dont think it has to be 488 specific as Im assuming this feauture is on all newish Ferraris

thanks !

It's a 'safety' feature on all newish cars (my GR Yaris has it) and involves the indicators flashing to warn other motorists behind you that you are braking hard.

Is it the hazards that come on or the brake lights?

If its hazards, do they pulsate or flash as usual ?

Seems to happen in far less than emergency braking/hazards on the 488....

Happened on my Abarth 595c when I test drove it back in 2014. But I never noticed again in the next 7 years.

It's the hazards in my Yaris and they flash at normal speed.

Never had them do it in my 488 so can't comment on that.

Hazard seems on odd one.

I was at a track with McLaren and I noticed that all the cars flashed the break lights under heavy breaking. I thought it was just cadence breaking until I saw every car doing it.

Never seen it out on the road but will now know what it means.

This was introduced on the E46 3 series. I thought all recent cars did it?

I thought so too.

Definitely happens on the 488 but only ever managed to get it to happen when trying an emergency brake test or when spirited driving in France. You'd be going some to activate it on normal Uk roads/driving.

There you go. That is my 4RS at Oulton Park being chased by my R8. Plenty of flashing brake lights there. smile

I wish this feature could be disabled, it's quite distracting on track

Does anyone know the actual criteria for the hazards to come on in this scenario in a 488? There is a G-force and speed component, but is there anything else? When on track its pretty obvious, (on my local track *every* reasonably modern supercar has their hazards flashing as they brake at the end of the main straight!) but recently I was on a spirited Sunday drive with friends and my hazards were coming on under braking that was not too urgent at all. Got me wondering if I had some kind of broken sensor…

According to Google:

“This occurs at a steady deceleration of over six meters per second squared and at a speed of over 50 kilometers per hour. It is also activated for as long as the anti-lock braking system (ABS), which has been mandatory in vehicles for a long time, is in operation”.

Interesting use of the word “steady”. You do have to be on the brakes fairly hard to get them to flash, about 0.6g retardation rings a bell. Also explains why on my video above of the GT4 RS the lights stop flashing as the braking effort is reduced as you bleed the brakes off into the apex.

I did not realise the bit about ABS. That could explain flashing at a lower rate of retardation?

Interesting. ABS could have been active, although was on a straight road in dry conditions.. I guess I’ll just keep an eye on it.
