Having spent 30mins emptying 1 jerry can into the capless fuel filler of my 458, I’ve developed a hatred for the designer of the capless fuel filler to a similar level of hatred I hold for the designer of the tiny ad-blue filler on Landrover vehicles.

So, before I spend time making something, can anyone recommend either a proprietary jerry can nozzle or 90deg funnel that fits, please?

There are plenty of those type of items available online but I’ve not found anything that looks like it will fit and operate the capless mechanism, or they are the same as the item Ferrari supply in the toolkit to fill from a 5 litre plastic can which isn’t suited to filling from larger containers without adaptation, as I did this evening with differing hose diameters and a funnel, but I would ideally like something proprietary.

Thanks in advance.

You can get flexible funnels like bendy straws.

Have a look for "Offset funnel" or "flexiblww funnel" - one of my bikes has the oil tank filler under a frame spar and is a complete PITA to get into.

I found a suitable funnel with an "s" shaped angular spout for a couple of quid in a cheap tool shop somewhere.

Thanks for the suggestions.

The problem is that the filler aperture isn’t just a hole, it has an outer mechanism that requires a 20mm diameter pipe (unleaded fuel nozzle size) to push against it so it releases allowing the nozzle to then push in a further 85mm to open up a secondary flap so the fuel can flow down the car’s filler pipe.

The angled and bendy funnels I can find don’t appear to have a 20mm diameter pipe or a 20mm pipe that is 85mm long.

The item Ferrari provides in the toolkit only sits horizontal due to the angle of the filler aperture being near-vertical so only works with a 5litre type plastic nozzle wedged into it, not for a jerry can to be emptied into it, with or without a jerry can nozzle.

You can manipulate the outer mechanism so you can get something of the incorrect size in but it’s fiddly, the mechanism then doesn’t shut properly without further and trickier manipulation, and the mechanism scores what is pushed in so likely to foul the mechanism or put bits into the fuel if it’s not hard like an aluminium petrol pump nozzle - even the Ferrari item is made of what appears to be ABS and scores on the mechanism.

I’d hoped there was a proprietary solution off the shelf to save my time making something but maybe people don’t fuel them often from jerry cans (what do people do on track days?) but I will so would like an effective solution. I did find some 3d printed funnels to the correct dimensions but I think they will be too soft for the scoring from the mechanism, and the solution in the US seems to be replacing the capless filler mechanism for a regular screw type which isn’t the route I want to take.
