I'm on the lookout for an F430 spider and have looked at over 10 examples over the past month and almost all have been sat around for long periods of time without being service.

Meridian Lyndhurst currently have a 2009 spider for sale at silly money that was last serviced in 2021!

Are there any decent well cared for examples still available or do most have missing history in this way?

Not just F430's. Many many Ferraris. A 550 that hadn't been serviced for 8 years was up at a very chunky price recently.

A point that completely goes over the head of most "investors". An owner that has saved £15,000 in servicing has probably opened a £20,000 can of worms and will never achieve an inflated sale price and only a fool would think a badly maintained car represents an opportunity, inflated market or not.

All very well, but if you ever find the words "car" and "investment" in the same sentence it's time to run away.

Many Ferraris have tiny annual mileage so I wouldn't fret too much about gaps between services. What makes no sense to me is taking one of these cars to KwikFit for a cheap oil change. Anyone who's trying to preserve value needs to take things a whole lot more seriously and keep main dealer costs in perspective.

One of the reasons to look at higher mileage cars. When I was looking these tended to have more complete service histories.

Some Ferraris do sit around a lot. My high mileage example has some years when it only did 250 miles. My car is described as high mileage, it’s only averaged 2000 miles a year. I didn’t fret about the occasional longer service interval when the car had barely moved.

in Germany people seem to take a more relaxed approach to service intervals, it feels like they service more by mileage than years. I am used to the UK approach so tend to service Italian cars annually, Porsches more like every 2 years. But I drive the cars, so to me it makes sense to have them checked over once a year. If I did not drive them, I would maybe also let the annual interval slip.

as an example, I think my Lamborghini had not been serviced for c. 10 years until I bought it. Did barely any mileage during that time (possibly none at all, would need to check).

One thing I would say is a book full of even main dealer stamps can be a false economy... You can get the book stamped with an annual oil service and get nothing else done... Id rather a car that's had the major services done over time than obsess over an annual stamp

If a car has not been looked at for over 5 years and in this period has done around 200 miles thats worrying as oils, seals etc deteriorate if not used.

What's more worrying is that the car at Meridien Modena Ferrari Lyndhurst was bought off a collecting cars auction (I just chat GPT the reg of the car and it bought up the auction that ended a few months ago). Explains why they were unable to tell me more about the car's history. When I asked what was done as part of their process of inspecting the car I was told they havent done so yet and only do that once a car is sold!!!! We have cars that sometimes sit here for over a year so there is no point in preparing the car for sale on arrival - we do this once the car is sold so everything is current.

Does make me wonder what else they get up to.

Not undertaking any remedial work prior to a sale is common practice and not something that would be cause for concern. Adding to the already high costs of the stock that high-end dealers hold is not good practice.

So they have taken a car off an auction site without any checks whatsoever? Sounds strange to me for a main Ferrari dealer! Surely they would want to know what they are buying right?

You would think so, yes. But generally that is not the case. Cars are prepared for sale in terms of valeting and any paintwork needed but are not put through the workshops unless there is something requiring attention that could influence a sale, like a misfire for example. This is down to a couple of issues such as the car sitting in the showroom for months or longer, or in some cases being sold back into the trade.

Not really. People don t have to buy it. If it’s overpriced it won’t sell.

Yes sorry - as soon as I came back to the thread I saw the emoji that my brain skipped when I replied!
