We used to allow just about anything but it caused more trouble than it was worth therefore we switched to alphanumeric instead.

We didn't force those who already had special characters to change there names though, so there are still a few kicking around.

If those with special characters changed their username temporarily then tried to change it back, could they use their original username including the special characters?

No, Bobby hasn't visited and it's not for that reason, it's main to simplify the parser used for processing quotes etc and to reduce the number of names that are too similar to each other (i.e. Mr Will and Mr_Will)
