Not that there's such thing as independent journalism anyway....
If bmw wanted to butter up PH they'd just invite them to some new car launches, somewhere nice, on a hotel-paid-for, free food, bring the family too kind of event where they've got all the time in the world to give you the spiel. Which they probably do (anybody?) And then there's the free long term test cars. Who would turn down months of usage of a free M3 just to remain mildly more impartial? It's just a job at the end of the day and you'd be extremely committed to do so.
I've always wanted to do some sort of study into how much these manufacturer marketing machines affect the article's output. I have been both pleased and disappointed by how PH is closer to the manufacturers than it used to be. On the plus side it does now review new cars, which it didn't do nearly as often back in the day. On the down side, by doing so it's not doing anything that 50 magazines newspapers and other websites aren't already doing and I haven't noticed anything different in PH's approach.
Things like 'shed of the week' are the real reason I and many come and read this site, because it's different, it makes you think, and the love and effort that goes into it is a lot more than yet another manufacturer launch drive. The same type of stuff made Evo good when it started out.
