REQ: Engine Theory Subforum

Saw this suggested in a thread, not sure if it's been mentioned to the powers that be but it would be a very good idea to separate the more technical threads in the Engines & Drivetrain section and have them under an Engine Theory subforum. There's some excellent technical theory (from the Dave's) getting diluted but everyday engine posts.

Also, is there a way to directly link to thread posts that i'm overlooking? I tried appending &r=xxxxxxx to the thread url on the off chance but no worky

In my view that we don't need another sub forum for Engine specific topics.
The forums are for current discussion. If you need to find a topic, try searching for it.

Perhaps this chap should start a wiki then it'd be easy for him to keep all his knowledge in one topic?

I generally find searching for something that you don't know exists is very difficult

Yes, I know you have seen it already, my point is that with half a dozen postings a day, it is hardly worth dub-dividing.

Yes because people discussing the finer points of how to cut a valve seat for maximum performance is the same as someone asking for general maintenance advice.

Besides, why is this such an issue? All that is required is the click of a button and the subforum is created.

I wish it were that easy!


But the point is, we only create subforums for topics that demand it. I'm not so sure Engine & Drivetrain is being swamped by Engine Theory topics at the minute.

I know the forum software here is basic...but it can't be THAT bad surely?

...and no, it's not being swamped but maybe if the subforum existed, more would take advantage of it. Or maybe i'm just having an "if you build it, they will come" moment.

I can't understand why anyone wouldn't want to encourage this sort of discussion, especially here of all places!

We're not trying to discourage it at all. But we try and keep sub forums as active as possible, if we have too many very specific sub fora they become stale and not visited very often. We normally create a new sub forum if we think that it's got enough traction in current forums to support its own section. The current forum is hardly overflowing as it is
Surely more people would look in E&DT than would look in a specific Theory sub fora so you've got more eyeballs and in theory more participation than a specific would have.

you'd think that but my concern would be that the generic nature of the majority of threads there would put the likes of professional engine builders off contributing. most that i know don't frequent forums for exactly that reason. call it snobbery if you will but the knowledge they posses is like gold dust!

We hear you. We really do. But there's not enough content at the moment to justify its own forum. Sorry chaps.
