So there's a thread about stuff. People are posting in it. The debate goes back and forth.

Apropos of nothing at all, Big Al says "chill out etc", without identifying any particular post or pooster.

A few posts later, again without saying what the problem was, the thread was locked.

What's the point of doing that? No rules were being broken that I could see.

Some mods have a heavier hand than others IMO&E. Just one of those things.

I must say, there didn't seem to be anything posted after his warning that deemed a lock. Seems a shame to lock that thread. One of those real life, serious issues, that will be divisive, just as it is in real life. The arguments were fairly good for 90% of the users.

+1

Indeed, why was it closed Mr Big Al?

The thread was locked as I asked members to chill, it was getting a little heated IMHO.

My post seemed to be totally ignored so I wished to reiterate the situation, and give members a cooling off period.

I'm currently awaiting for the arrival of another mod to discuss the thread in question, with a view to re-opening it or not.

Yet again we mods get criticised for moderating threads, and giving up or spare time to keep the site a nice place to be.

Still as the saying goes you can't please all of the people all of the time..... in our case it just appears that we can't please any of the people any of the time.

Whilst not envying your role as a mod....and no, you cannot please everyone all of the time, I fail to see where the discussion got out of hand, unless like the previous Roman Catholic church thread, a whole series of very out of order posts were deleted.

No-one is criticising the mods. We know you have a stty 'rock and a hard place' job, but clearly some folks did think it was a bit abrupt.

Never mind, we now know that no discussion shall take place with regards to closed threads.

If not getting to specifics and to be honest I haven't followed the whole 729 posts, I pop in and out of numerous threads mainly due to the number of reports sent in, and on this thread the mods forum today is full of them.

It's not always easy to get it right from just jumping in at the deep end and trying to gauge the mood. I don't always get it right but I always endeavour to call the right shots.

As I said, the thread is not dead, as it hasn't been removed, but it won't be reopened until it's been discussed in the mods forum.

I have the greatest of respect for the moderators, and although many see it as a thankless task, I do genuinely appreciate the job they do.

However, in my 11 years on Pistonheads I have seen a great many "heated" threads and that was not one of them. It was a high volume thread, for sure, but I didn't see it as especially heated. I thought it was a fairly level-headed debate actually.

I'm not really sure how people could have "chilled" more after the warning, other than to either cease the discussion or all agree.

Still, probably for the best. The thread was pretty much at an impasse and going round in circles anyway.

Once again moderation is discussed on Website Feedback despite the clear instruction in the Posting Rules to take issues up with Paul Garlick.

I use about 20 forums, and PH is the only one where moderation is regularly questioned.

>dares to be different<

On all the forums I participate in, probably a dozen or so, PH is the one where the moderation is LEAST mentioned.

Well as the thread in question has now been discussed and reopened this thread is now redundant.
