IE8 Compatibility mode shenanigans

My (elderly) PC running IE8 has started sporadically (1-2 times a day only) refreshing the page in PH, then bringing up a small message saying something like "there was a problem with the compatibility mode that this website was running in".
TBH I put it down to my cranky old PC, then last night it did it on the OH's modern laptop.
Has anyone else experienced this?

I will look it up later, but is your IE8 running in 64 bit mode?
if it is some scripting and code run in 32bit only, therefore you will get some issues when trying to run some websites.
there should be a backup 32 bit IE8 installed as standard for situations like this or you can go into compatibility mode and switch it across.
(from a hazy memory as not had coffee this morning).

The laptop is 2011 vintage and running Windows 7.
In any case there's no problem, it's just a little interruption, then continues normally.

could PH be running in a different mode (IE6/7) and when full blown IE8 tries it has some issues...

On the tools menu check compatibility view is not ticked. I also normally click on compatibility view settings and uncheck the 3 checkboxes.
I wrote an asp.net site that only worked on ie8 as it had some advanced features not available on previous versions. It wouldn't run on some ie8 machines at work due to this setting. Their ie8 was effectively running as an older version.
