In these days of high resolution and high DPI screens, isn't it time PH moved on from using 600px wide images? Also, the visually jarring crudeness of the jagged PH banner striped across the corner of most images is completely solvable.

Do it in Classic ASP and we'll make it happen. 
But seriously, at the moment we can't do much about it because the technology used to run the news / forums is so out of date. You'll see on the classifieds we do have a much nicer watermark. The above will be part of ongoing upgrades, but there really isn't anything we can do about it in the immediate future.

I think it might be to do with which fonts are available on which web server.
It used to work quite crisply. Check out this from 2005:

That's still pretty jagged imo. Font is a bit better thoIt used to work quite crisply. Check out this from 2005:
