threads relating to cars for sale

Since i sold my last car via pistonheads i've been thinking about all the threads that seem to pop up along the lines of does anyone know this car etc. You only have to take a quick look at the Porsche forum to see half a dozen threads does anyone know this gt3 etc... question I have is why are these threads allowed under the name and same rules when a lot of the content is pure conjecture. Surely as a seller you are allowed a certain amount of privacy to sell your car.

Surely the potential buyers have a right to know as much about their potential purchase as possible.

I think it is a good thing, a well known car and history can benefit both the seller and buyer.

Such things people want to know is if it has been driven harshly, had any accidents/repairs or if it has been tracked.

Surely as a seller you have right to privacy without people who may or may not know the car in question making comment on it. I can appreciate that you'd want to know how heavily a prospective purchase had been tracked. However when people who have no knowledge of the car begin commenting about how that may have been the one that had an off etc, surely that's when the mods need to step in. What happens if the seller isn't a Ph'er and doesn't realise there is a thread on his pride and joy and then wonders why he gets no calls.

Yup we can't have these pesky people knowing about cars you are trying to sell. That is just bad for business.

So if you are selling a car the best option is to get a mate to ask the whole of PH if anybody knows your car!! Good way of drumming up interest that I will remember for the future. I think a few clever people have found a way to circumvent the rules.

Slight EFA, conjecture helps nobody in stuff like this, and those who slate other people's cars without being able to back it up should have their posts deleted. Imo.

Threads help sell cars that deserve to be sold. I'm sure that on balance, sellers would lose out if links to ads were banned and PH would become a significantly less interesting place to be.

This was how I interpreted the OP too. If I was selling my car I'm not sure I'd be that happy with it (and me by extension) being discussed on the forum, especially with some members' fondness for seeking out personal information elsewhere, posting it up and the reliance on it being reported before it's removed.

But I also understand the desire to find out the history of cars for sale. Tricky.
