When the PH forum search is borked, the fallback is the Google search that appears on the same search page (http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/search.asp)

Many people also refer to searching the forums via Google using the syntax site:www.pistonheads.com/gassing {search term here} so it seems logical that the results from these two approaches would be the same.

But they aren't. Far from it. The former typically delivers awful results, whilst the latter is very good indeed.

I wonder whether the abuse meted out when the search is down would be reduced if the existing Google search implementation were to be replaced with the latter example giving significantly better results?

That's actually worth looking into. We'll do some investigation and see how difficult / expensive / time consuming it would be.
