Usernames and Spaces: What Happened?

I recently 'interfered' with the user name on my profile by mistake and was somewhat dismayed when I realised I could no longer re-enter my old user name without removing the space.

What is the reason for this, and can I have my 'space' back please?

Aye, that's me! Or it was until about three days ago when I was no longer allowed a space in my username.

Note: this applies to any username, not just 'Great Pretender'.

Now you see what's actually happened is someone snuck in and registered Great Pretender while you weren't looking, now you've got a problem

As far as I know, newbies can have spaces in their username (more than 3 characters long) but old timers can't? (unless a nice techie helps?)
