Attitude on 1000bhp GTR thread

Hi chaps,
But confused by the general attitude and subsequent locking of Jamie P's Readers rides thread.
Posting up videos made of him doing standing starts up to 140, one handed, then it all kicking off when a couple of us point out the general idiocy of doing such on the public road.
Pretty much all the negative feedback was considered, constructive and supportive of man's desire to enjoy high powered machinery - yet the responses ranged from the derogatory to the ridiculous (another hijack by the 20's plenty brigade).
Fair enough, there's a wide spread of people on here, and not all have similar attitudes towards socially acceptable responsibilities. What's more surprising is Slinky's comments when closing about people getting on soap boxes and ruining threads...
When you consider 10ps's experience, which included comments by the media and prosecution regarding his posts on a different car forum, I would have thought PH would be actively seeking to remove association with such potentially explosive material being posted merely in order to show off.
Seems like the Max Power burnouts and standing start brigade are taking over the asylum. I always thought this place was a little more mature in its appreciation of motorings perception within general culture/media.

The thread has been an issue for us, in terms of moderation, for a while with periods of calm followed by periods of unrest (I sound like a war correspondent...)
I did answer an email on this subject earlier today with regards to the video, and it went along the lines of saying that we don't actively remove video content unless moderator reports alert us to a problem or it contains content that is inappropriate. If a member posts up a video of themselves being foolish on the roads we expect the thread to be self-moderated by fellow members on the thread, along with us stepping in if required, instead of straight removal. But yes, bad driving displayed by members is not ideal.
The thread had run its course, that could have been made clearer in the closure message, but the content posted made that quite clear if you read up a few posts from the last mod message. A shame, but (IMO) closure is better than removal where possible.
As for actively promoting a Max Power style, that couldn't be further from the truth and if that is the impression we give then we need to work harder on that.

You need to speak to Slinky then.The impression he gave was very much that anyone questioning the wisdom of doing double the motorway speed limit on a country road, one handed while filming on a phone was "on their soapbox".
I love reading about fast cars, not so much about idiotic driving.
Personally, I think the comments regarding the video were an over reaction and causes an unnecessary sway away from the car and into a 'tit for tat' debate on good / bad driving etc.
The video clip shows nothing of where it was filmed and assurances were made on the thread that it was on private land. Benefit of the doubt should have been given and then the thread could have just returned to talking about the car.

Indeed, it was explained a couple of times that it was private land but posters were intent on not having a word of it and carrying on their argument regardless. It wasn't Jamie but it was someone that drives a ~750bhp Monaro so maybe if you could take things in faith a little more the forums would be a more tolerant place and one that's nicer to relax and read about cars onPlus, look at his YouTube account, plenty of vids on the public road.

i also commnented onsaid thread i can fully understand where people are coming from but why feel the need to make a comment about it based on someone else's experience (ie the ref's to 10ps thread) sometimes IMHO people need to take a step back & keep their mouths shut as said above benifit of the doubt should have been given.
i will add i think we are all guilty of bad driving at some point in our lives put the foot down or not driving for the conditions.

Honestly, Don't you think trawling through other videos on his youtube account to try and find a reason to believe his speed was on a public road, somewhat in bad faith?Plus, look at his YouTube account, plenty of vids on the public road.

C'mon - you know what going down this kind of line is going to achieve.... An internet argument that ultimately leads time and time again to the same place.. The thread gets locked and we miss out on hearing about the development of the car.
Maybe if we're a little slower to judge then it will be better for all of us.
As a neutral who has read the thread but not commented on it, both 'groups' are as bad as each other to be honest.
The inital comment regarding the speed/phone usage/public road was made for the correct reasons, if coming across a bit preachy. The OP's response was poor and could have been better thought out. Of course, then the lines are drawn and everybody picks their side.
It's childish and becoming quite tiresome. Everybody has an opinon, which is why PH can be such a great resource. It's a shame that, like religion, people feel the need to convert everybody to their views and fight those that do not hold them.
Sadly this is a common occurence on PH and a lot of other fora.
