... PH needs to take a good long hard look at some of the vitriol posted on some of these forums e.g. the Tulisa thread. there is a thin line between freedom of speech and expression and some of the positively hate filled comments posted.

If you are concerned at the content please hit the 'Report' link above the problem post. This will ensure that the moderators get to see the issue and can act appropriately.

The moderation team do not read every thread, so they rely on you flagging problems.

Paul did thankfully ban one person from the N,P&E forum as a result of his deeply unpleasant comments made on that thread. The comments posted were jaw-dropping in their vile misogyny.

I'd agree though that that forum does need some more proactive monitoring and maybe a few short-term bans for some of the more vitriolic/excitable posters.

NP&E, apart from a few rows etc in SP&L and GG, which to be fair are usually quite fun to watch unfold, really does seem to be the area crying out for strong moderation. The thread in question besmirches PH, there are virttually no posts of worth, why not just delete it?

With all due respect, we are always told to hit the report button but it seems rare that action is taken. I've personally reported posts which clearly contravene PH policies or are just pointlessly offensive in relation to the thread they're in, yet the posts remain up.

Leaving these posts up simply derails the thread as other posters criticise the post/poster rather than respond to the topic.

I appreciate that PH mods cannot respond to every report to advise the reporter what action (if any) was taken but if you tell members to use the report button, do you think it might be helpful for your moderation to be a bit more transparent to other members so that they know using the report button isn't just ignored?

There were at least six reportable comments by the third page of a (so far) six page thread. They were all 'I would', references to the well-known video or variations thereof plus one pointlessly abusive one. Not to mention the pictures and subsequent comments.

Is this really what PH wants NP&E to be about?

Just keep reporting them. In the old days it was clear when people had been sin binned, unfortunately it isn't now but stuff does get done.

It's certainly not the worst I've seen on PH. She's an 'interesting' character resulting in interesting comments but I'm surprised, genuinely, at some of the comments here. In all the years I've been here this thread is not the one I'd expect debate on.

The OP made a fair point, we don't read all comments and once a few were reported we acted with removal and one member was removed from the site permanently. Now, it's a thread that we can live with...that's not to say that future comments won't trip the alarm.

We've removed comments we feel are inappropriate as per those reported but I can't help but feel we can't win here. We jump in and clean out threads only get cries of 'mod overkill' or 'wish it was like it used to be' and now we haven't done enough? Regardless, all mod reports are read, discussed and actioned if required.

Garlick, the 'I would' posts are still up. Does that mean they are allowed in NP&E?

What happened to rule 12? "Use the website feedback forum for any comment that doesn’t refer to site performance or technical issues."

Or is it like typing "Google" into Google?

Paul, thank you for replying. I do realise that the task of moderating what must be in the high thousands of replies a day is no easy task, but some of the comments of late do reflect very badly on the overall impression of PH.

I think Silver has a fair point regarding some of the quite rabid misogynistic comments posted on PH - I read some of them and shudder at the sheer aggression and embitterment carried through some posters words. Though some will say 'it's just words, get over it', when you add them together and start to look at the overall picture and the cumulative effect, it's not that impressive really - we are alienating a great many people who take one look at some of the comments and run.

And, forgive me for saying it, you are a decent chap Paul and here comes the infamous 'but'... your comment regarding not winning one way or other, is a cop-out. PH is brilliant at what it does and it is an extraordinary diverse resource, but really, it does at times need a more visible moderator profile. Some will no double disagree, but the way I see it, I think it's important that you be aware that some here are really quite concerned about the 'message' being sent out to the casually observing world.

Regards,

DMN/Russell

I've been asked on countless occasions to be a moderator.

I just can't seem to find the emails. I'm sure they're there. Somewhere. frown

I don't see why my post on that thread was singled out and quoted? it was far from the worst comment made and makes me look like the culprit that got the thread locked.
