Good afternoon.

I'd be grateful if someone could provide a concise and accurate explanation of the process involved in selection of the adverts shown while I'm browsing PH.

It appears it's not possible to ask about specific adverts without the stock replies such as; "you've been looking at dodgy sites, you dirty boy" or "you are John Prescott AICMFP".

It would be good to understand this once and for all and a comprehensive reply might be used as a reference post every time the question comes up again in the future.

Over the last couple of days, I've seen a couple of adverts which I would consider NSFW and, I can say hand on heart, totally unrelated to anything I've been viewing or searching for.

I've wondered if the advert selection might be linked to the content of the page being viewed ( see highlighted reply in this thread).

Thanks,

Eric smile

I am getting the same adverts and it's putting me off PH a bit.
While I write this ad I am being lured by two adverts, one begging me to browse through "1,000 Asian Women's Profiles" and the other listing four women supposedly online RIGHT NOW in the Ukraine.

Just in case I am browsing for Thai brides in my sleep, I signed out and went into "InPrivate" mode, but still I get accosted with inappropriate adverts:

Although I won't take the stair lifts one too seriously.
Yet.

Thai Brides:

Supposedly, this is also Thai Brides, although I am a bit dubious about the Movember entry on the left

Perhaps a Thai policewoman:

Or, er, a Thai policeMAN:

Not sure these ads are quite the right image for a site like PH. But presumably Haymarket are happy to take the money from Google.... rolleyes

I'm seeing similar ads and had been wondering the same.

I've had our ad team investigate and those ads should be turned off in the next few hours.

Thanks Matt.

When you have a moment, it would be really good to get an understanding of how the ads are selected.

I'm fed up of folks telling other folks that they're only seeing ads which relate to what they've been googling for recently.

Also, aren't you able to specify that you don't want to see a particular type or category of advert showing up on your site?

Rather late reply to this, but this is basically how it works:

You visit a website related to, say, gambling; let's say it's William Hill for no reason other than it's the first name that pops into my head. They serve you a tracking cookie when you visit their homepage.

As you then traverse the web, William Hill (and other online vendors such as John Lewis, Amazon etc) will bid for your eyeballs over RTB (Real Time Bidding) which is a method of advertising to an existing audience. As the PH page begins to load, your data is sent back to the various ad exchanges and whomever is prepared to pay the most to serve you an ad wins, and serves you their ad.

If you don't have any tracking cookies - for example you have cleared them out or are using a different browser - then you will get served fairly generic ads, usually motoring related when on this particular site.

There are a lot of other factors involved as well, one of the most key being your IP address. If your IP address is a non-UK one then instead of UK specific adverts you will get international ones. These tend to be of much lower quality as few advertisers are interested in advertising to users in other countries and they are moderated less closely (by the ad-networks) as they are seen by a much smaller percentage of users.
