Homophobia/language on PH...

I've really noticed recently how much generally homophobic opinion and language is being expressed on PH recently. A prime example in a recent thread the lovely term "Sausage jockey" being used on the Manly Convertibles thread.
Am I alone in thinking that this really isn't on?
We are in the 21st Century and I'd like to think that we'd got beyond the childhood snickering about same-sex relationships. Would you really talk like this, express these opinions or use that kind of language in your workplace? Why is this any better than casual racism, or am I wildly out of touch and actually everyone else calls their fellow workers "darkies" and "poofters"?
Why should racism be censored behind the swear filter but frequent and blatant homophobia go unchallenged?
Just raising a point really. Perhaps everyone on here does actually laugh behind their hand at "The gays" however I'm glad to live, work and socialise in the kind of environment where someone's sexual preferences are accepted and welcomed, and there's none of this name-calling nonsense...

I would tend to agree, however I've not seen so much recently- Nonsense about "kicking in sponges" and "The mental" which wouldn't really cut it when talking to anyone other than behind a computer screen...There is an acceptable undercurrent of hostility and abusiveness that seems to thrive on PH, people taking a dislike to something posted then picking a fight with the poster or anyone who dares to think different from them, very childish and quite unpleasant.

Mainly because its done as a joke. Do straight hairdressers have hang-ups over whether they are seen as gay or straight? I dont know and its not my place to say if they are offended or not. Let them come on here and ask for an apology maybe before banning the banter?
Jokes are always aimed at someone or something. We seem to have lost the ability to differentiate between what is a joke and what is abuse. It used to be an apology was sufficient if offended, now we have people who are not even in the targeted group being offended for them just in case they did indeed see it was a "joke".
My SiL is gay and the group of friends my wife occasionally goes out with had a fair amount of gay men.
The stuff you hear from them about other gays is quite incredible. But then I guess just because they are also gay, its perfectly acceptable to use the same terminology and not be frowned at, whereas as a straight white male you have to simply keep your mouth shut smile politely and think carefully before opening your mouth else you'll offend someone somewhere.....

...poster stands up for themself and mods ban the poster rather than face up to the above mentioned 'hostility and abusiveness' that welcomes those that have a difference of opinion from the thread norm. Thereby encouraging such behaviour.T
im gonna say 1st off that i dont condone any homophobia/racism in any way....
however i feel that comments made on here need to be taken as they are said and not read too much in to things. we are all adults, if something offends you then why not just tell someone that you dont think its appropriate. it is never ever going to be possible to censor the internet. suggestions such as "add 'sausage jockey' to the swear filter" are ludicrous. where does it stop? we'll end up at a point where everyones posts look like this

its unrealistic. at the end of the day they are just words on a screen. if your that unhappy you can always just use another forum but i can gurantee you will read exactly the same thing on there

I think straight people need to stop being offended on behalf of gay poeple, who are in my experience not offended by such nonsense at all.
If people are genuinely upset at someone using the term "knob jockey" then IMO they need to grow a thicker skin. Life is too short to get all uppity at something this trivial.

Who said the people being offended were straight? TBH from what I hear them say they themselves are often the worst offenders - but as you say it is true that just because one is not offended another is. That however is life and the choice is to either ignore the childish remarks or waste time trying to prevent what is the majority of the time on here, silly banter.(Cue "Ere, my best mate's gay an' he don't mind it" etc...)

lol, your post prempts this, but my gay mates use casually homophobic slurs far, far more than other people I know. Mind, most people forget that even within the gay community, lots of people identify with each other differently. It's quite common to be a gay man but dislike mincers, for example. (Cue "Ere, my best mate's gay an' he don't mind it" etc...)

ks...I agree that if somone is being an arse and using gay banter with the intention of being offensive it's out of order. However, if someone calls another a knob jockey in a jokey way I just can't see how it's on any kind of meltdown level.
Mind you, I do show a wide leve of ignorance in general, so it might just be me =)
