Can anyone explain why photos which are the right way up on my iphone and my mac always end up rotated by 90 degrees when posted to forums using the uploader?

Because a bit of metadata in the photo tells the Mac ecosystem that the image needs to be rotated. The PH uploader might simply ignore that piece of metadata and thus not correct it.

I just upload them to Photobucket instead and link from there.

yes but what is really odd is that even if I end up rotating the photo 90 degrees in potatoshop - it STILL ends up sideways. Bloody macs - they really do have some bloody odd quirks.

Upload using http://postimage.org/ - it shows you the image and gives you the option to rotate it again if needed.
