For a carefree PH experience, I think the concensus is ...
- Use Firefox
- Supplement with Adblock Plus
- Add Ghostery

Adblock - yep, Adblock + and Adblock Edge
and Webget, which rates PH 90% TRUST RATING.
I've just got rid of conduit and Eat @ "browser.exe" so I'm keeping a close eye on anything suspicious ,and pop ups with Adblock to me looks suspicious. Might rtry Ghostery
ETA- looks like one old program which ceased on IE at IE5.5 - BLOCKED ALL TRACKING COOKIES.
EETA - ADDED GHOSTERY, blocked everything possible and still get the annoying ads.

agree with the above regarding firefox + addblock
I do get annoying blanks where adds would have appeared in the middle of posts without addblock, but it's much better than having the adds themselves
Did you select the default block lists when you added addblock?
It really should be working for you
I have also found that the Opera browser has addblock available for it, and that works okay as well.
There are some 'media tracking' 'addons' that some downloaded shareware will add that can cause real problems.
I got rid of the couple I 'caught' and all is well again. Sorry but I don't remember their names.
If you are still having problems after installing addblock, then check your browser options to make sure popups haven't been allowed for some named sites.
Good luck; those popup adds are impossibly annoying
