New format Classifieds
Discussion
Hi Guys. Not checked out the Classified ads lately. But I noticed its been re designed. BAH!! For the worst in my view. Firstly it takes ages to go from Cost to manufacture. For instance I have been trying to look for an old Ford. IE Capri/Anglia/granada. But it comes up with a list of virtually every ford made with a tick in a box next to the model that you have to 'un tick' every one that you don't want to view, leaving the few ticked that you do want to view. This is very frustrating.I know its probably my fault really. But why can't they just leave it as it was.Its not broken so don't fix it
So what do you think?

I agree that is the way around that, but generally I have issues with the new format:
1. It works fine on a powerful computer (like the MacBook Pro i am on now), but it crashes my iPad 1, which is my weapon of choice while my wife is watching her usual trash on the TV.
2. The initial drop downs don't seem to work properly, and are effectively redundant
3. It is clunky, and the slower the device you use, the clunkier it is. With the world moving towards tablets and smart phones, you would think they could have designed it with those, and their frequent broadband speed limitations, in mind.
What a shame - it could have been so much better

Hi Obee. Thanks for the backup. I thought it must be something I was missing.as the same things happen to me. Not sure why my topic was closed though. I guess it appeared I was finding fault with the site. And I never used one swear word.

I've just been on the classifieds for the first time in ages and just clicked out in disgust. PH used to have THE most user friendly platform which has been completely over complicated.
It is worse to use than Autotrader and that is saying something.
It is clunky.
So I click used cars. I am offered with 'All Makes' as the first drop down. If I want say Mercedes, I have to scroll down a massive long list, can't just start to type MER and it automatically appears. Then the drop down box, again, it comes up deselect all, but other times when this is on the left, I have no idea why sometimes the menu's revert to down the left hand side in column format but here it doesn't offer the deselect but you can type in the first word of make, the whole thing is inconsistent and lacks cohesion.
Ever since the first re-hash it has been rubbish, everyone has said this, and it's just gone on to get progressively worse.
Good luck with it.
Think I'll stick with ebay!

I'm inclined to agree. Especially on a tablet, etc, it's an awfully big list including makes I'd never heard of.So I click used cars. I am offered with 'All Makes' as the first drop down. Why not break the list up - 10 most popular brands first, a separator bar - then a longer list of the rest?

"TVR"
"Lesser cars"

We are taking note of people's opinions on this and will be looking at this other the next few months.
In the meantime - the revert to old classifieds feel is here (if you ignore the filters on the left and the look... ok so only the first page categories)

Sure sounds like I'm not the only one not happy. So why not put my topic back where I posted it,and ask for opinions eh?
Dave.
This is the (slightly modified) post I put on another thread... so hopefully answers some of your questions.Dave.
The feedback of our users is very important to us, along with all the other forms of feedback we have for the site (Dealer sales, user behaviour, surveys, forum feedback, face to face meetings). And this feedback is a mixture of anecdotal and statistical data.
The best measurements of success we have are volume of stock (those that see PistonHeads as a place to advertise to get response and sell their car), and the amount of emails and phone calls an advertiser is getting about the car (which no doubt all will want when trying to sell a car). These tell us a lot about the user experience as well as the functionality of the site... and both those measurements have improved since the new design was put in place.
The difficulty is that the classifieds has changed its nature over the past 8 years and has moved from an editorial experience (click through tonnes of cars, browsing for interesting things) to a faceted search experience. The latter returns better conversions for the sellers, but does change the way it use to be.
The move to more touchscreen devices is not something we have kept up with as well as some of our competition, and they have the advantages of development teams 100x the size of ours, but still not an excuse - we will endeavour to try and improve the phone and tablet experience, so hopefully you will find it better over the coming months.
Hopefully you find the above useful, and comment away, we still read them all.
It's reassuring to hear that someone's listening. PH generally has the feel of a naughty boys' club, and long may it stay so. It's really only classifieds that causes frustration in my opinion. FWIW, Autotrader seems to have taken a step backwards recently too. Far harder to search on there for, say, cars with electric leather seats, not that you can do that on PH either as far as I am aware. As a parts exchange PH is really handy, just a bit clunky on an iPad.
I used to work at a music software development company, and constantly had to remind the developers that not everyone had top of the range 30 inch monitors or fast laser printers like they did.

Want some feeback, the new classifieds are s
te, everyone was happy with the old format so put it back. Surely having a useable site that people can actually use allows more cars/items to be sold so people will use it more, damaging the number of people viewing vehicles on the site is commercial suicide. Does the ad revenue from displaying Google ads or bits of people private browsing history make up for the revenue lost by having a bad site that no one wants to look at?

What a brilliant idea! Revert the classifieds to how they used to be and slowly watch the revenue go down. Actually that doesn't sound like a good idea at all does it?

What people fail to understand is the way people are using the classifieds have changed. Now PH could just ignore the change and watch the revenue go down, or they could change it to suit the way people are now using the classifieds.
